What do i have to do, to drill this stuff ?!
alright trying to finish visceral off and theres two very important pieces that need an 8mm hole through them, im trying to drill through this special steel ive been using for a while and this piece is particularly nightmarish lol,
basically tried drilling it with a 4mm cobalt bit (and then a 6 and then 8mm one) brand new out of the packet. they both drill mild steel like its butter but it literally doesnt even make a mark on this stuff. i found once you manage to start a hole, it will drill with alot of work but i just cant get the hole started, baring in mind these are BRAND new cobalt bits (that cost a fortune)
tried drilling it at maybe 200-300rpm in the mill and no joy, even tried heating the entire thing up red with the mapp torch and letting it air cool to try anneal it thinking maybe its hardened... no luck.
im borderline just hitting it with the welder to blow a hole through it?! argh

lmao well i worked it out i think, have to heat it TWICE with the mapp torch then get a hole started with a 1mm drill bit then step up in 3mm increments. this SUCKS lol!

Was that the same steel Flexo is made of? That stuff is impossible to drill... _________________ Farnsworth - "I hate these nerds. Just because I'm stupider than them they think they're smarter than me."

try runing a hot weld on the oposite side of where you are goinjg to drill or just hit it with the tig then quickly burry it in dry earth or sand so it cools slow then try drilling it after ists cooled give it about an hour to cool

I would love to know what this steel is - I just finished drilling and tapping M8 holes in Bisalloy 400 and after drilling a pilot hole with a tungsten drill bit, cobalt drills went thu like butter.

Its not so much that your steel is some special Unobtainium megasteel, its that you seem to have hardened sheets of tool steel -
for free!
. I would be very interested to see how tungsten drill go in it.
The ARTU drills really do work but you have to use them carefully or they will chip.
I have just re sharpened cheap carbide masonry drills to drill hard stuff but you need to be careful they don’t get too hot and melt the bronze holding them together.
Interesting thread; I wont bother using the drill attachment on Skelly if fighting Flexo. _________________ Satisfaction is proportional to effort and results.
