New builder
Hi
I am really looking for advice on how to start competing and building. I have a basic design idea and a few parts already for my bot. I don't know anything about how anything works but i am a very fast learner. But i want to build a bot and enter into a fight and not have my bot absolutely shredded and i don't know what weight class i should enter.
i have a budget of around $1000 but I already have parts like a Huge electric motor and a few batteries. My biggest concern is how I move the bot and how I make it because transport is a key feature.
There isn't a lot of choice in weight classes in Australia its pretty much all Featherweights (30lb) 13.6kg.
As for moving it thats not too bad @ 13.6kg which is why we make them that size. Its not really feasible for us all to build 220lbers and travel. _________________ Steven Martin

The sportsman class is designed to allow for competition without destruction. Damage in this class is normally cosmetic. You could build for the sportsman class and use the same parts in the open class later. You will have more than enough to build a (or two) very competitive sportsman(s) with $1000. _________________ So even the rain that falls isn't actually going to fill our dams and our river systems

Sportsman means no spinners and no wedges- and you must have a actuated weapon- same 13.6kg weight as feather😎 _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

That would be the main featherweight class, something like Tombstone is definitely not allowed in the Sportsman class.
Have a look at Glen's build pages for Decimator:
http://www.robowars.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2023
for ideas on building an offset horizontal spinner. Also search the forum for Miles & Jules bot Judgemental. Building a like Tombstone as your first bot will be quite a challenge but with the budget you have its quite possible. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

As cool as they look probably not the best thing to start with if you have no idea how anything works. Also _________________ Steven Martin

Ok,
Thank you for your help so far. I mend a design like tombstone but a blade like Nightmare. Also i found a huge motor only it has 3 wires coming out of it
A red one (which i'm guessing is positive)
a orange one
and a Yellow one
Any help with finding the cable out is hugely appreciated because we don't wanna break it because it is as fast as nightmare's.

When you say "It is as fast as Nightmare's"..
How can you know that if you havent had it powered up (and thus connected yet ?)
If you want *speed, then a series-wound motor from a car-heater fan is a cheap source of motors that *love to rev, if you dont load them down too much. ScoopyDoo used one for its saw, and it used to hiss through the air it revved so fast.
Not much starting torque though, so not good for spooling up a heavy flywheel, just high rpm things, and they also tend to be reasonably large diameter.
Brushless is the go for power-to-weight if you can handle the price and the requirement to make mounts and pulley adapters for them. _________________ Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people

Also ...to make spinners you need access to a lathe or parts made on a latheā¦.Also all my spinners except the first couple of attempts have had super tough hardox blades. You need that for a spinner to not break first time it hits another robot. check out the marketplace section on this forum there is often some ready made weapon blades for sale there. _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

Motor Form
i found a way to check motors for ac or dc and the motor is ac so it is useless
I would suggest trying to build something that drives then worry about weapon _________________ Steven Martin
