NSWRFC at Serial Space: 14/8/11
Hey guys, main reason i'm still pushing to us meeting up this weekend is to decide on a new direction for the club, basically i'm sure we've overstayed our welcome at Jeffs quite long enough and need to look into the possibility of hosting events in other locations. Nicks ant arena is brilliant and portable and a great step into this ability.
I'm a regular attendee to dorkbot sydney 'people doing strange things with electricty' which is held at Serial Space, near Central Station. The building has a brilliant vibe to it and Pia (who hosts dorkbot) is very keen on hosting a robot competition there! Here's some pictures of the venue:
Personally I enjoy this sport too much to just let it die, so would like to volunteer to take over the role as president for the club... I feel i'm somewhat adult enough for that responsibility but not so old that I'm too busy with work! In a few weeks time the uni semester will be finished leaving me ample time and resources to get cracking on renewing the club.
On another note the IGS robot club is going quite well, we have 6 keen members who are finally realising that their robots could actually be used in outside of school competitions, albeit we're using laser cut acrylic for construction, so maybe they can compete in a non spinner special event...

Good point - I would need to get the van close to unload the ant arena.

Yep, rarely for the city the space is in a lane way where you could easily park, it's an oddly quiet area. We can definitely get the van close enough to unload the arena. _________________ ( •_•)
Just got a reply back,
There is a fee for renting the space for the day, $100... could easily be covered I reckon by people who come and watch or the club if needed (we all did just play $100 last event). There isn't a free spot till July but I think maybe early August may be a good date to shoot for, aim for then to have lots of new debut builders and a really epic event. I'll be doing a talk at their next upcoming dorkbot about what we do and how you can do it too. Also got loads of ant kits and a set of instructions suiting...
EDIT: Here's what the lane way outside the space looks like. mmm... grungy...
Space is the green doors where the dude is, through there.
interesting. Free parking near central station? seems too good to be true _________________ <Patrician|Away> what does your robot do, sam

Ok time to get a bit more happening here:
Our next planned dates are:
25th June - Ants at Glens
13th August - Feathers
The serial event can happen on a weekend sometime in July or August. I'm leaning towards August few weeks after the feather event... (so people don't skimp on makin feathers!).
Let me know what kind of dates would suit most and i'll make the booking.
The serial space event will be public and host both ants and beetles. We'll be doing some pre reg shiz like was discussed but not in the extremes Brett was mentioning.
If I can get cheap flights might be keen for some ant action, if its public. Will see how scorpy goes this time and if I can get this melty going. Been way too long since you guys had an interstate event. _________________ Steven Martin

If we could couple this in line with the feather event... Maybe ants beetles on the sat and feathers on the Sunday at Jeffs? _________________ ( •_•)
Well yes but I definately don't have any spinner ready Feathers.... Though that could change between now and august. Maybe time to redo the flipper. _________________ Steven Martin
