I am very happy with the SSR; the rating seems quite conservative and it has taken much abuse without letting out any magic smoke, or even getting particularly hot. If you are worried about heat. just attach a small heatsink, which wouldn't add much weight.

@ Nick: Do you have any form of braking, or do you rely on air resistance?

I rely on other bots for weapon braking Laughing I really can't see the point of weapon braking, it just wastes energy. If you had an extra radio channel, you could always add a relay and switch in some resistance across the motor at the end of the fight.

The cost of postage is putting me off, I guess I'll go down to Jaycar & buy some SSRs.

To be read: If postage costs too much, then package is too heavy. If package is too heavy, then bot is too heavy. Cool

A picture of my wheel hub:

With the top rim removed I'm guessing it weighs 7-8kg

I'm trying to decide between a few "blades" of steel welded on, or strips of steel, like a lot of the drum bots are using these days. I'm leaning towards the strips, since, I fear, that the blades will bend and curl up at the edges. Opinions?

considering the shape of the hub the strips would be pretty hard to do. id weld two massive flanges onto the sides and bolt a big block of steel in between them as the tooth ala megabyte.

Yeah, I'm with Glen on the Megabyte design. They seem pretty damn good and MB has never thrown a tooth IIRC.

Laughing I think the only time it did was when it went head to head with buster but that was actually the tooth physically exploding. Shocked That was SMB too.
Glen, maybeh some big tool steel blocks like you've got would be in order, not sure where mike could find some though.

i dont think that would be required. you could get away with some 12mm mild steel no sweat. vish uses them and they work pretty good. hell they are consumable items Razz

with a design that leaves little overhang on the end of the tooth i reckon theyd live for a while.

I'll admit, I've been lazy, but I went on a shopping expedition to try and sort out as much stuff as possible. Didn't go that well :S

After letting laughed at for wanting a locking bush for an 8mm, and not really wanting to pay RS 67 million dollars for a trantorque, I was sold on a 9mm taper lock bush from Transeals. Unfortunately, the best thing that they had, knocked me down to an M size belt.

I've got some adapting tube from the hobby shop, so I'll put it together tonight. I stopped in at Jaycar, and bought the SSRs for the motor, and a heap of relays for Punk's speed controller. Almost asked for a job, but I was feeling pretty scruffy at the time Wink

I didn't feel up to driving in a third direction for a battery charger, I'll get around to that sometime.

I've got a lan over the weekend, so building will just have to continue on wed.

Should I use a diode across my SSR, or is the internal diode satisfactory?

all theory says yeah why not but it isnt critical in my eyes, ive been running ssr's in orbit for a good while now and have never needed em, hav'nt had a single issue, may as well throw it in but it isnt vital
