I would probably find it easier to get a Monday off than a Friday.

I would prefer a big hindrance in one corner. A 600 mm high wall for example. A powerful pushy bot could ram an opponent over the wall (as happened in the UK). A wedge bot could use a spinner's reactive force against it. And flippers could obviously flip into it.

a 60mm high wall you might be able to ram someone over definitely not 600 Razz a pit of inconvinience with a angled wall over it so you cant just flop in like most of the robots at that event did wouldnt be too bad by me.

or some angle iron on the floor would be cool from the wedge driver perspective. would give you something to flip the other guy over with Smile

With 5 bots i cant see any number of rounds giving them an equal number of fights.

Re the hindrance.
Perhaps put a bit of 20mm angle, vertical in the corner but make it such that a 0 ground clearance bot can get out with some skillful driving. IE have it say 1 meter from the corner but only 50cm long so you must turn and drive out through the gap if you cant drive over it.

Each robot has 4 fights and would fight every other robot. Simple.

The point is not so much that there are no byes but that every robot has an equal number of fights. That way it is fair for everyone and no fudging of scores is needed.

I had another chat with the Ideas Festival organisers.
They are having a program launch later this month and would like a couple of robots to do a bit of a demo. I havn't got a date nor a venue yet. The demo will be done at the audiences feet so absolutely no weapons.
So need a couple of fancy looking robots that drive reliably.

So you don’t won’t Badger then.

You know mostly what we have; happy to send a bot up if you can think of one suitable.

Another setback. The Juptiers Casino Community Benefit Fund rejected our grant application. I can't get any feedback from them but I guess we are not high profile enough for them. I will give plan A (Ideas Festival funding) another go.

I don't know. I'm taking it one problem at a time.

I find it pretty insulting that they didn't give you a straight-up reply - it's not like you haven't been trying hard enough. Give the Ideas Festival people a polite but firm nudge; if it might help at all I can send them an interstate letterhead message as well. We all want the Ideas Festival to happen and be as successful as before, so any support you need, its there!

There isn't anything wrong with the Idea's Festival. The problem was the grant application to the Jupiter's Casino Community Benifit Fund. Both grant processes have failed, goverment and casino, so we are turning back to plan A, which is to ask the Idea's Festival organisers if we can have some help. They did the same thing last Idea's Festival, we could just give the RoboWars arena a one way trip this time. So I'm going to spend the next few weekends trying to rebuild some stylish robots so we can impress at the promotional luanch party.

The thing I hate about the Jupiter's grant is that they are giving $10000 to a golf club to buy chairs and tables. And $7500 to a community band to buy a colour photocopier even though sheet music is only black and white. But we can't even get $5000 to build the core part of our club.

It doesn't sound like you are dealing with logical people, dare I ask if they are octogenarians? I guess you tried all avenues and if you think they might be swayed by interstate support, we will be there with bells on; Brett would say the same. I don't know if anyone got videos of the crowd at its peak at the last event, but that would help ram home the 'bang for buck' element, at least for me.

Sorry if I didn't explain fully last night but that post was made less than an hour after I opened the letter from the JCCBF after a long day at work and I had not had a chance to think about it. I was letting people know the news as soon as I had heard it.
The reason why we went ahead with the grant applications was because of massive stalling by last years Ideas Festival organisers. The Ideas Festival change their organisers every 2 years as it is a bi-annual event. The reason why last years organisers were stalling was because of restructuring within the Queensland government that has led to the one year postponement of the event. They did not know this at the time so I can't blame them.
When it was looking too late to get some funding from the Ideas Festival to build an arena in time we had a look elsewhere. After a few emails to the Queensland government we found our event will come under the department of sports and recreation but all grants issued by that department must follow strict guidelines. Among those guidelines it is very clearly stated that all money issued by the department must benefit the health and well being of the community. No matter how I worded the application I could not see a way to pull that off. I was then given the advice to look at the Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund.
As part of running a casino in Queensland the owners of the casino must give a minimum of 1% of their profits back to the community. This is done through privately run but government controlled grant schemes. The JCCBF has the jurisdiction of south east Queensland. They receive hundreds of grant requests from many different organisations every year but only about one third are granted. Most organisations have to wait for their turn to get funding. And while we are unsuccessful this time I believe that if we re submitted the application to be reviewed for the March '09 round we would be successful. But this would too late to get the arena for the Ideas Festival as we really need to get started on it no later than December.
I could not get in touch with the Ideas Festival yesterday afternoon as their office is only open business hours. I will give them a call first thing Monday morning to discuss our other options.
Our other options being:
1) Get funding directly through the Ideas Festival (who get their funding via government grants) to build our arena.
2) Send a couple more emails to Mark at Sidetracked about his offer to sell the Sidetracked arena.
3) Talk to Mark about hiring the Sidetracked arena again.
4) Have a look at other arenas that are available in Australia.
5) Run the event with heavy weapon restrictions without an arena.
