They're dirt cheap, locally available, made of metal and have a grippy rubber tyre. Ok, so they have a kind of crappy roller bearing which is a loose fit on a 1/2" shaft, but it should be pretty easy to machine a solid hub to put in there instead and lock hub, axle and wheel together with, say, a large roll pin.
Has this been tried long ago and found to be bad in some way?

Good question, I don't recall anyone trying those wheels before. They were probably just a bit more expensive, heavier and more work to adapt than the red wheels and were passed over for the easier option.
