Wow, what a weekend!
First off we would like to thank Big Boys Toys for their support and Steve/Erika and the team for setting up such an amazing event - all your hours of hard work certainly paid off. It was awesome to meet you all, the atmosphere is great and you are all really helpful whenever we needed anything
We were surprised with how well we did, the robots only took minor damage overall and outperformed my expectations of them greatly. Dreamcrusher dropped a chain a couple of times - we fixed this for day 2 by adding a chain guard to stop it popping off. The Undertaker was having ongoing electrical issues on day 1, which we found later (Sunday morning) was due to some melted wiring packed away inside - cheap speaker wire really shouldn’t have been powering the whole bot! After spending most of Sunday rewiring, it seemed to be back to its normal pace.
New builder things we learnt the hard way:
Have the right gauge wire, just because it works in testing doesn’t mean it will hold up in battle.
Make sure that your speed controllers have room to cool off, we zip tied them to the motors (with foam blocking the cooling holes!) and they didn’t turn out happy. Everything gets MUCH hotter in battle.
Check over the robot straight after a fight, don’t “leave it for a bit” before tightening the screws. You never know how long its going to take. We had to do some last minute repairs because we let ourselves have a rest after a fight.
Wedges should touch the floor, Dreamcrusher's wedges would have almost been as effective if they were just flat sides - gotta get under the opponent to do any damage.
Steve (our Steve) uploaded some of our fights on his YouTube channel, I'll bug him to upload the rest at some point: https://www.youtube.com/user/stevenbarksalot/videos
We will hopefully be back next year
