Also 5m of relatively thick wire is more expensive than relays. Lol _________________ Steven Martin

Elric (Ya ya doom's) robot from one of the first QLD events used toggle switches controlled by servo's.
If they upgrade to RC, I reckon it would be worth the extra couple of dollars to use 10A's with relay code on them. At least you get failsafing and all the important stuff then. _________________ https://www.halfdonethings.com/
I was going to put sockets in the pcb ready to accept an avr, Darlington or equivalent in modern terms and some diodes and a 5th relay for weapon. _________________ Steven Martin

Ohh this was tethered, thought id missed something as im like, ok clearly he's not including the radio _________________ <Patrician|Away> what does your robot do, sam

My theory is that a driving plank of wood is the tipping point.
Which I think is pretty standard even to this day. _________________ Steven Martin

A robot class where you were limited to a certain set of materials or a certain dollar value of components would be an interesting idea. I'd like to see that.
Cutting boards, drill motors, wood, recycled parts. I liked the wooden wedge at the nationals as a concept for a starter class.
Tethered is good for a "build your own robot" workshop, but I can't see a competition class for it.

I've been toying with the idea of a 1lb robot class that is ment for entry level combat robots.
No machined frames only hand tools allowed except 3d printers
no lipos and no brushless motors.
Batteries would be NIMH AA cells provided by the event.
cells are not included in the weight and you may use up to 6 of them.
What I would like to do would be design a control board that can drive 2x sanyo gearboxes per side and one 380 sized brushed motor. (one direction only)
I think this would level the playing field quite nicely and allow for more interesting designs to be made.
I am gearing this towards something like a boy scout troop so the cost has to be fairly low.
2 radios would be available for those who can't afford them yet.
Okay so i kinda thread stole for as second but its kinda similar to what kato is talking about.

My feeling was always to use Beetles as an introductory class, 3lb, big enough to not be like working on a swiss watch and some fun to fight with and more crowd pleasing than ants, plus achievably small arena construction costs, but small enough to surely acheivable under $100 even including a radio. _________________ <Patrician|Away> what does your robot do, sam

Shredder was like $150 or so I think including the radio. (excluding the machining time lol) _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets
5 diodes no caps or resistors might need to throw on a 7805.
Cheap but oh so dirty. _________________ Steven Martin

I like it.
Simple and if you programmed the chips the wring is so easy people rather inexperienced with electronics could wire it up with some veroboard or similar on the cheap (not the best for the shock of combat but it would get you in the arena).
Need something for VCC of the micro and a LM7805 is common and o so cheap. _________________ Remember to trust me, I am an Engineer.
