The best material for a new bot is knowledge; free with the Riobots book New builders shouldn't be allowed to pick up a tool before reading it!

Not so sure I agree Nick, Large parts of Riobots book will go over peoples heads or be of no interest to them. It is worth a look but for a first bot forum advice for someone not from an academic background may be as good or better IMHO _________________ Remember to trust me, I am an Engineer.

Well sure, its not a book you can absorb in one reading but its a fantastic resource and full of solid facts, not just opinions like so many guides. Learning by failing is one way to build a bot, however its less disappointing when you avoid some of the fails by educating yourself a bit.

The riobotz book is amazing from an engineering point of view, but facing facts someone like a high school student going into combat robots that way would probably think they need magnesium alloys and Ti-6Al-4V eli and then give up when they find out the costs and availability of such materials.
Glengineering has shown that good robots can be made with cheap materials and personally I learn by getting my bots trashed, how would we have found bog washer wheels otherwise? I got killer to smash the crap out of em.
