Next time, I have some ideas to get rid of the reflections and smooth out the action with a miniature camera dolly track for even better close-up action Very Happy

Well I'm slightly more conscious now so some final thoughts.

First off thanks all for coming, Angus and Kristy for videoing/photographing and Nick for supplying the arena and camera work also Smile hope you had a decent enough day, Shame about the on and off again weather but i can't control that quite yet heh.

Good job Andrew on putting together a great little robot that won rather convincingly ala won every fight on the day, lots of nice new robots there too. The quality of the fights is getting better by the event IMHO.

Ill put up a pic of the scoring table tommorow for anyone that wants to see.

As for now its full steam on modifying the beetle arena for the next event. Not much time but hopefully it'll be slightly more workable this time round Razz!

Nick: The videos i did with my iPad through the top of the arena were nearly reflection-free, maybe worth videoing from the top for future ant events?

I noticed that too - its due to the lens being right up against the plastic so no light can reflect off the front of the plastic & into the camera. There are a few things I can try tofix the problem and there is a whole month to experiment.

Photos have been uploaded to my photobucket account. Feel free to use them as you wish. Credits would be awesome if you use them on other sites Smile

Just looked at them photos also and damn they came out nice.

Hey Nick,..know the problem with reflections in the glass.... one way of minimising camera reflections is to film from a side that has no backlight. A wall just behind camera is good.....noticed this from the featherweight arena at hackerspace.

Looked great at the serial space event with the lighting from above in a darkened room ..it was like an aquarium of destruction..he he

But I do like the sound of your dolly idea!

@ Miles & Jules: The set up at Glen's place is in the middle of the yard - no easy way to avoid back lighting I'm afraid. To fix that problem, I will try a large camera hood to simulate the same effect without completely blocking off one side of the arena for the punters.

The dolly track using salvaged computer slide rails was not so great; a bit jerky and noisy, so I ordered a set of linear bearings like the ones in Angus's CNC table. They have 3/8" steel rails and plastic bearing blocks that should be silent and hopefully smooth. Topping that off is a Manfrotto video head with oil damping, something I have been wanting for about 20 years:

The other idea I want to try out is having two cameras mounted together; the main one and the GoPro in wide angle mode to capture all the shenanigans of the vertical spinners, which should make for more exciting video clips.

Finally, I'd like to try better audio. The current set up can't take an external mike and its really letting the video down. I really like to hear the audience reactions and that seems poor at the moment.

Sounds good! Yeah big ass lens hood would help...yeah we got an old 70's miller fluid head tripod that still moves like a dream(eve though it a bit leaky)..and we swapped out the old school wooden miller legs for a set of less old school manfroto tripod legs.....I always wanted to get a pair of the chinese miller rip-off tripods they have on ebay for $200.....I bet they would work great. Never seem to have the spare $400 for em though especially since robot building has begun.he he. Good work on the vids to!
