It would help if we knew which free CAD programs you were refering to. There are quite a few out there and each one is different. Different people prefer different programs. Just pick one and try it. If you don't like it try the next one.
Personally I don't use the free programs. I find them rather slow and limiting. I prefer to gain hard copies of good programs through other means.

Me and some other roboteers use the Rhino programme. Although its probably best if you can find someone who's willing to give you the full version rather than the free download. Solidworks is also a great programme, but its pretty expensive and I don't think there are any free downloads.

Anyone know if you can tell solidworks the total weight of a assembly, not just tell it the material. _________________ Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.

Yep
Tools -> Mass properties
This will just add up the weights of each of the parts, so you wil need to chech that each part uses its own correct density before you do the mass properties in an assembly.This is all done the same way for both parts and assemblies.

Then tick Assigned Mass Properties...and enter the value under Mass.. _________________ Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.

Ok, now I'm having trouble. I have just got a new laptop and have been trying to install my copy SolidWorks 2004 onto it. This is a copy of the program that was sent to me a year or so ago by one of our southern builders. It installs fine but when I try to run the program it says it hasn't been conmissioned properly and shuts down. So I have done something wrong when installing it and I can't remember what I did to get it to work on the other computer. I'm guessing that a few other builders have a copy of this same program so can anyone remind me of the trick to get it working.

No dongle. This isn't an official release.
