The MC is the referee to count out, call time out for separations etc. If the crowd chant Pit Pit Pit he can pull the leaver. Smile

Yes maybe the judging sheet consists of a place for the winning bots comp number.

If the ranking table runs on numbers it might make sense to put the bots number on it.

Now you wouldn't have fans/audience members referee at cricket, or ARF, or football, or soccer? Why would you want them judging our events?

A professional sport deserves professional officials.

I guess you've never been to Australian football match. Wink

So we can't trust the builders and we can't trust the audience and we have no proper judges. We're screwed.

(excluding competitors), I'd say the two Marc's (Marc DeCarlo the cameraman, and Marc Nauman from Sidetracked) are both pretty experienced and fair judges - There have been a few close calls, but I dont think they've been accused of making any seriously bad decisions - so we do have a couple of semi-professional judges in Vic so far. Smile

I like the idea of having *1* "guest judge" (out of 3) who may be a competitor, crowd member or whatever. it adds a different viewpoint to the judging, and helps avoid the "groupthink" problem.. and if the guest makes any seriously bad calls, they can be outweighed by the two experienced judges.

Kind of like "Red Faces" (for those of you old enough to remember that Wink )

Actually, most of our judges are retired builders - or builders who aren't competing at that event.

There are of course builders who've competed for years and still don't know the judging criteria. But for the most part, builders make good judges.

What's really interesting is the first few times a builder does judge. "Hey! This is hard!" I only say that because of all the times I've taken crap from builders who insist "I won that one by a mile." when it was in fact a close match. Builder's see matches with very different eyes that judges see them.[/i]

When we all devoted more of our disposable income to robots than to our savings accounts and "entertainment budget."

Although "fun hobby" and "professional sport" are not mutually exclusive. When it stops being fun, we should stop doing it.

But if you're spending more than 5% of your income on it, it's not a hobby anymore.

What percentage would I be spending before it's classed as a dangerous addiction? Laughing

one would assume.

I am wondering if for "big" events we go to 7 judges?

I know Spockie has a very hard time finding 3 judges. So seven is out of the question. unless your able to find them. Wink

Judging is not an easy thing to do. Trying to keep every one happy is not possible no matter what the judging rules / guidelines are and it is not the job of a judge to keep people happy.

I judged to the guidelines for RoboWars 4. I was not out to please anyone or make him or her happy in any way with my decision.

It is only fare that every one has access to the judging rules / guidelines before the event.

Spockie has done this and after judging at RoboWars 4 I think it is a very good system. There is a clear guide to make consistent judging decisions on fights.

There is no right / wrong way of doing it. But it needs to be consistent for every one. as well as every one know what the judging rules / guide lines are before the event.

I'm not saying don't review it. But if there is to be a change, it needs to be very well thought out.

Read the guidelines and judge some matches.
Read guidelines of other robot wars comps from around the world and use those to judge the same fights. See if there is a difference.

There are plenty of videos around to judge. But don’t judge the KO fights. Watch and judge the boring fights. The controversial fights are when the guidelines come into play.

Judge a fight that someone sits in the middle and does nothing but waits for a competitor to ram him.

Judge a fight when two wedges are doing the waltz in the middle. (there are a couple of those from RoboWars 4)

These are the fights that the guidelines are needed and help the judges.

I would of hated to judge some fights with out the guideline provided at RoboWars 4.

Though our system is allot simpler than the Victorian one.

I remember reading a judging guidelines that was sitting around up at the Ideas Festival at Brisbane, and also all the discussions on the forums. But can someone point me to a link to the current judging guidelines so I can have another read?
