A bye isn't counted as a loose. It might show up in the listing as such but its not counted in the determination of the finalists.
bye's don't affect the scoring metrics in any way.

The score is something akin to an audience appeal or style points.
A really spectacular bot (say bender or yamum) that impresses the judges with some particular something should score well. However it doesn't mean they should win the fight.
win/loose is a more analitical approach who was technically superior.

4 of the finalists are picked on their win/loss rate and the next 4 are on points. This means the top 8 bots should be a good combination of bots that can effectively win a match and bots that while they may not have won are still pretty darn good.

The loose every fight and make it to the final is a feature not a bug.
Thing is you have to really impress the judges to do this, and as far as I'm concerned that's a good thing.

53 fights over 2 days isn't a bad result, especially for those with more than 2 losses

If not for this system reboot would have been eliminated in the heats, as it is it went on to retain its title as the supreme world champion of robotic combat.

I haven't read it in detail but it sounds similar to the system they used at robolympics.

It's WAY better than the Robolympics sub-light format; that system is best summed up as "single elimination with a consolation fight". If a bot didn't win both it's first two matches, it had ZERO chance of ever making the finals. Each bot was only really guaranteed two fights vs our "as many as you can take" round robin. With 53 fights in 2 days, Battleshed raised the bar for all other Aussie bot events - well done everyone!

BTW: many videos to be posted shortly Wink

The system is custom built for combat....its the same old argument ,does a wedge robot that spends 2 minutes 45 seconds, out driving, out manouvering, being more aggresive , taking the battle to the opponent .....then while attacking the opponent who happens to have an uba spinningweapon is knocked out ,sound reasonable.
In the end the spinner is 100% the winner of the battle but not the war...
The systems designed to allow robots to be judged all round ,not just on its KO ability.and this is great.

On a different note ,Thanks so much for all the guys from interstate coming and making a great weekend, it meant a lot to the NSW boys. A special thanks to Daniel ,the lone Queenslander ,well done
Also thanks to Gary, for bringing such an array of robots ,it was awesome.
Thanks to Lachlan,Andrew and Chee for a great judging effort.
Thanks once again to Jeff J for letting us use your whole house.
Im sure theres heaps more to thank ,but it was a great weekend and once again thanks all for coming.
Cheers Happy Sarge

Jake, are you willing to provide a bit more information on your 400 LED timer board?

Very interested in that Smile

Just wondering how you managed the controlling side of things. I found this little piccy [http://valen.botscoop.net/marryong/arena/timer/DSC00275.JPG]
Which gives me a rough idea that you've used something like a 40pin PIC chip with a bunch of ULN style chips to drive the segments directly.

I've been working on a similar thing in my head lately for the local car club that I'm apart of and a suggestion for an LED timer board for our motokhana days was brought up. I was thinking about just using a simple 18X PicAXE to control four 7-segment LCD drivers to transistors to switch the planned 175LED/Digit display. I haven't looked to indepth into it yet, but your fancy board has sparked a lot of interest Smile
