it all depends on what that pump is rated for.Flow rates pressure rpm etc that looks like a fairly big pump probaly need about 40 hp or more at full load -flow but if you dont require a huge flow you could gear it down to put more torque into it with a smaller motor but get the high presure at less flow rate. cant tell from the pic if its a vane pump or a rotary gear type pump

All hydraulic pumps are basicly what is called full displacment type pump some have vane seals some use gears and some use a rotating iner and outer gear type (cant think of the name have gone brain dead at the moment) .
Old stye hydraulic pumps and special purpose ones use pistons and valves to get to extremly high presures but basicly they all shift the oil from one side to the other with (theorrecticaly no loses) but they all do leak a litle internaly .

( Vanes leak the most, folowed by gears rotors then pistons which are the most efficiant but highest maintainance)so if you turn a hydraulic pump even at a very slow speed then the hold back the flow, the presure will build up to a very high presure unlike impelar pumps which build up presure with revs as they throw the liquid out but will only go to a certain pressure if the flow is stoped and wont get any higher as the liquid statrs slipping past the impela.

probaly rambling on a bit but it will give you an idea how they work.

If you have a look on the Nissan Silvia/Skyline/Cefiro/180SX/200SX you can steal the HiCAS 4 wheel steering solinoids and pumps of them Cool Some sweet gear in the HiCAS system...

@Totaly_Recycled yeah it's a gear pump,but not quite sure if I'll need *too* much power because I'll only be running MAX 2 rams (me Think)

@TDT cool Cool , I'll have a look into that,Could I find those parts at a wrecker?

Power sterring pumps are vane type most of them are good for around 400 to 600 psi most are presure released at around that presure.Iff you sprag them you will get much higher presures but run the risk of bending the vanes or splitting the houseing .

you need to quantify power...lol what do you want the rams to do it could run 100 rams of a 1 hp motor if fyou just want them to go in and out ..what size rams are you talking about and how much force at what speed do you require from them is what you need to work out .

cool,thanks for that Totaly_Recycled,I don't think I'll go buggern' around with the vavels because knowing me it would probably break first go Laughing

it's not a massive ram but it would only be about ~30cm long and about ~5cm bore,I'll get more accurt mesurements tomorow

speed isn't a big problem but it would be good to have a fair amount of force.

Aparrently the crusher on Sg Bash has 15 tonne crushing power Shocked ,so mine would probably be about 6 tonnes MAYBE

No worries you realy need to work out what load you need to move with it at what speed so you can work out its power requirements . If you want to lift your self up and down on a chair at 30cm a minute then it wont require much hp at all if you want to lift 8 ton at 30cm a second then it will require a huge amount of input power .

Basicly you need to know the ram bore then how much work over what time period you want it to do and go from there .
