I heard a story here at work where one of the guys here was travelling on a train through the middle of India. Occasionally the train would have to stop so the engineers could replace all the railway spikes that had been stolen out of the section of track ahead. Apparently locals would go to the railway tracks at night and remove the steel spikes that hold down the tracks and then sell them to metal merchents. They could steal spikes from up to 1km of track per night.
