I've had a 260Z (early model with the same chassis as the 240) sitting around for years, and it's finally getting put together (as a race car)

When I first got it I replaced some of the floorpan and chassis rails, but overall it's a pretty rust free shell.

70's cars are a bit of a problem for rust, especially the lighter ones!

Somewhere in the 80's manufacturers worked out how to stop them rusting so badly...

Silvias do have a little bit of a modern car feel, but less than plenty of other cars (especially later model ones).
Once you replace a bunch of the huge soft rubber bushes with polyurethane or rose joints they feel a lot more gokart like Smile
While they're a pretty good car in standard form, what I like about them is that they're such a good platform to modify. They start out with the right basic design with solid mechanicals, and there are endless parts available to improve it from there.

My current Silvia will be making about 180kw at the wheels (360hp or so at the engine going by the usual 30% drive train / tyre loss figures) once I turn the boost up - with nice streetability and 10L/100km fuel consumption around town.
Engine mods are just exhaust, air filter, intercooler, and boost controller.

I'm very much agreed with Andrew about the Silvia. While there is a 'classic' era and it has its own appeal, 'late 80's and 90's cars should NEVER be lumped in with with modern (ie, say '00 up) cars in terms of that 'new car' plastic cocoon feeling.

There's a real difference in raw feel and cost effectiveness vs. weight vs. style vs. peformance etc etc.

Especially when considering japanese cars, I've always strongly felt that the late 80's to early 90's, for me, represents the 'golden age' in the automotive industry. Alot of good models died in the early '00s or evolved into something less appealing and little has come along to replace them.

yep, that's when the technology was sorted out and simplified so it was reliable, manufacturing quality got really good - and car companies played with some interesting ideas and made real drivers' cars.

In other news, while the Brisbane event was going on, I was at a billy kart derby in the middle of nowhere - near Bathurst.
It was pretty awesome, with a 700m long track dropping 100m, lots of hairpins, a water hazard, and a jump!

I ended up winning Smile

I agree with the sentiments of the 80s cars. No plastic engine coverings or obscene EPA restrictions of the modern car to be seen yet with the added bonus of actually working compared to the earlier generation Razz

All hail electronic fuel injection! (amongst other things Laughing)

My dream car falls into that category.

Lancia Integrale?

if you like rallyesque cars that much and want to be able to actually afford one, not have it fall apart every two seconds, want to be able to find parts for it, and can deal with going to a rounder 90's shape and a bit more weight, try an ST185 Celica GT-FOUR. So ridiculously cheap these days

Just finished moving house on the weekend, decided to christen the garage tonight with some AW11 + 1MZFE goodness Very Happy

The crappy stock Camry exhaust fitted. Flows like a rock and is restrictive as AIDS, but it's an easy bolt on solution. Should be sweet to remove in the future and get a good 20HP improvement.

SW20 Turbro muffler to go with the 1MZ, should flow enough for the 3L Smile

Lifting the AW11 up to slide the 1MZ under her.

Motor under her

Back on the ground

Removed the boot so I can climb around the back without damaging the boot

Lifting the motor into position

Enough space over the gearbox for a GT35 in future Very Happy

Will try to get the drive shafts in tomorrow night and start aligning it all up to work out where I need to make the mounts.

wonder how many of these cars would pass an ANCAP rating lmao.

Just crazy watching people fly out of their cars as they're barrel rolling away.
