I can't believe how cheap their brushless contollers are - has anyone seen any reviews on how well they work?

Many, they even have a forum where people post their combo's and photos plus how well they perform. It's extremely impressive...

Easy, do a relay reverse. It should be the same as 3-phase. Just swap over 2 of the cables going to the motor, and it should go backwards.

ie, where it was going a-b-c-a, it will now go a-c-b-a. magic!

Relays are chunky.... This is the main reason I looked at a DIY brushless controller. Spending $100+ on a controller then having to add backyard relay hacks is shit IMHO... If it doesn't do what you want it to do, don't buy it Laughing

Is it possible to buy a cheap controller, take out their drivers and fets, and put in your own? It would still have all of the sensing circuits, which should work either way.

I am looking for a brushless replacement for a short Mag motor. After looking at the AXi and Neu sites (plus much Googling), I can't find any torque figures or graphs for brushless motors. Does anyone know what the general torque characteristics for sensored and sensorless motors are?

interesting question. try the united hobbies website forum. theres a guy on there that is dyno testing a few motors from them so might have some data on the 5330 motors.

the neumotor site i was sure i saw some graphs on there? maybe not lol you could probably email them for that data as im sure theyd have it on file. despite neumotors slow service lol.

I've posted them before, but they are probably the biggest not industrial brushless I have seen. Plus the construction quality looks good as well. No figures on the big motors, but if you email them, I'm sure they can help you out Smile

I looked at those. To be honest, they don't look nearly as sturdy as the oemrc 100A one glen got, plus im not sure what to make of this comment on the 36A version. Confused
"UNRELIABLE CONTROLLERS
Jeff
The 5 stars are IRONICAL! As bad reviews are automatically DELETED!!!
Got two of these ESC's With the USB programming key for a GWS ME-262 with twin fans.
One of the controller failed after only a few secs of use on the bench! It was already fitted inside my ME-262, ready to take off. I had to remove everything and start the installation with new ESC's !
The one that still works has been tested on several brand of motors: Mega Motors 16-15-5, Hyperion out-runner, and GWS in-runner. The ESC was able to drive all these motors properly. Throttle is not very smooth though.
But how long is it gonna last? Is it gonna die on the bench or will it be in the air crashing my model at the same time?
The USB programming key sounds good on the paper. But to program the ESC, a battery pack MUST BE CONNECTED to the ESC, while it is at the same time plugged to the PC through the usb port. This procedure sounds extremely risky for the pc. What would happen to your pc in the event of a malfunction or a short circuit in the ESC? Seeing how these controllers are unreliable, I would avoid to connect them to my pc again!
Apart from that, programming features are rather basic compared to other brands.
Unfortunately the low price of these ESC's has a cost, and it's called low quality!
I'd rather pay more to get something that works. Crashing a plane to save a few bucks on the ESC is not a clever choice.
To the attention of United Hobbies:
What's the point having a customer review section i"
