Beetleweights - Team Knightrous - QLD

Just in the sourcing parts and conceptual design phase.

Current Plan:
25MM 1000RPM gearmotors for drive
900mAh 45c Lipol Battery
Banebots 3-9 ESC's
Hardox / Sawblade armour

The rest is up in the air right now, considering clamper/lifter design though Smile

coools pretty big battery! ive never flattened out my 30c 700mah thus far. but bigger is better i guess Laughing

might even sample a 500mah 90c lipo if i can find one about.

I'm looking for a battery that will be able to supply 40-60amps for 2-5 secs for the weapon, and the 800 - 1100mah range seems to be where I can get this kind of current from without paying >9000 for the pack.

I want to use a brushless system for the weapon. I'm looking at a Scorpion SII-3008-1220KV controlled by a HobbyKing Brushless Car ESC 60A w/ Reverse . Battery wise, I'm currently considering a pair of Hyperion G3 CX - 2S 850mAh (25C) packs to make 4S 850mAh. The Scorpion motor is pretty expensive, but having seen the abuse that Glen as put through his Scorpion motors, I'm confident it will be a case of buy, install, forget, especially in my application of using it for a clamper/lifter design rather then a spinner. Also considering the idea of making the weapon design interchange able, have a clamper/lifter that is fast with low gripping power and then a clamper/crusher with low speed and high gripping power.

Current rough robot design in my head is a mutant robot bastard child of Katjusha

And

Razer

The lower body shape of Katjusha with the weapon of Razer

so aare you attaching this motor to a massive reduction gearbox and actuating it mechanically? or a small hydraulic setup?

Your pretty quick there Jaemus Smile.
Wasn't going to say much about it till I got more of it going, but I'm currently scaling down the hydraulic system I designed for a featherweight a few years ago. Design uses a positive displacement gear pump into the base of the ram, with no external piping or valves.

Sounds cool. That ESC has worked pretty well for me on my RC car. It does have reverse delay though. You have to stay at neutral position for a few seconds before it will let you go backwards.

Ah, so you actually have to hold it at the neutral position for 1-2 seconds?
I might have to automate that with a B328 so I don't get into troubles when rushing in the midst of battle. Good to hear you've had some success with it, have you run it up on 4S though?

Very keen to have a go at the hydraulics in a beetleweight as it's a good scale to attempt to build my design within a reasonable price range. When I initially looked at this for a featherweight, it was going to cost around $500-600 to make due to having to design it properly, get various bits CNC'd and to get it engineered (I wanted 3000psi, so I wanted it safe!). This smaller scaled version should be only around $150 - 200 to get up and running.

Yes. So if you push it forward straight away it acts as a brake.

I am running 4S. But the BEC fails with 4S so you need an external one. Other than that works fine.

That sounds Kool/interesting,I was looking at building a small version of a piston pump for a feather, but I wasn't sure if the time/effort would be wort it.but it sounds like you have it all sorted out.

Crushers are cool. You can choose your level of destruction and give your opponent a chance to tap out.

Initial design is looking good, . Pump + Ram is currently ~400g if Solidworks is anything to go by. Need to CAD up the motor and a gear reduction next and then a quick trip to the hydraulic place to get some o-rings and seals to cad into the design correctly. Then it's onto designing the low pressure reservoir, which I think will be some PVC tubing with a spring loaded piston to ensure the oil is pressurized into the pump.

It will be fairly tight one weight, but I'm hoping to make the pump/ram apart of the chassis for strength.

Drive motors arrive today.
Another piece to the puzzle falls into place.

And my GoPro Hero HD Camera arrived today, so I'll now be filming HD video at as many events as possible!

*wipes dust of thread*
Hydraulics have been put on the back burner for a little while. But moving forward to getting a Beetleweight running for Robot Serial Killers event, so I'm working on another design for now.

At the moment, rough idea is a mini-Firestorm.

Drive: 2x 1000rpm gearmotors @ 4S-6S with either colson or liteflight wheels.
Battery: 4S/5S/6S Turnigy 30C 500mAh LiPo
Weapon: Front hinge flipper powered by a Turnigy S8166M Servo 33kg / cm servo
Armour: As much Hardox 450, saw blades and carbon fibre as I can fit.
Electronics: AR6110B Spektrum RX controlling a pair of BotBitz ESCheap30 ESC's.

Looking at making a start on it this weekend with any luck.
