howdy all,
its official, x men 3 is cool besides ending was a lil lame but generally cool.
Now to the event, Orbit performed very nicely considering i literally have barely touched it since last event. Over all i think i came third or 4th or some crap and won the rumble for the second time in a row.
Was able to exact my revenge on roadkill nicely and get a lucky hit when he acidentally got stuck between wall and my disc with back end and back corner basically exploded but was crap plastic and no interals were damamged (thank goodness) so hell rebuild and come back.
Retread match went well as i made him do some nice 360s.
The only robot i got beaten by twiceee and still cant defeat (yet) is that damn cobra, grrrrrr.
The rumble was MANIA, choas everywhere, i was holding back ALOT for first minute and only going for peeps who wanted to try and ram me or caus me grief but bent cobras side in a lil jamming a wheel a lil, took a direct hit from jolts blade to blade which left a lil nick (excuse the pun ) on orbits disc but generally still fine and in process somehow knocked a tooth off shearing the bolts and leaving some gouges in the sides but nothing too critical besides barely cosmetic. oh also somehow getting singularity nearly 2 metres in air, i nearly pood myself when that happened.
Some standout things from today, tread wear indicator is a damn cool robot, that saw is wicked and man its just so damn cute, jolt performed nicely today also with zero problems and as always brought the hurt, orbit during a vitory dance fell over and disc bounched it back upright like a true victory dance should be .
Also the electric bike madness and nice chat with some policeman
Now i just gotta get new drices, spectrum arrive and rip eveyrthing apart and start next version, i got your number Glen _________________ Andrew Welch, Team Unconventional Robotics

The matches on the weekend were pretty awesome and everyone performed pretty well. I was quite happy with TWI, it performed better than I expected. Even stood up to Jolt, it only died coz it cut one of its own wires
All in all a good event.
Two things i want to raise however.
1. The timing was disgraceful. We really need to pick up our game there. If only for the fact that others get picked up ie Angus and Nick/Grassy, Andrew had a movie, I had to return the car for the wife, couldn't see S#!T in the dark and so on. Everyone enjoys themselves but we need to wrap it much before then.
To do this we need to arrive at 10 and kick off at 11. Thats a late start so we get a bit of a sleep in. The time between matches needs to be quicker. Especially in round 1. If your bot isnt ready you need to forfeit. Its not fair to everyone else.
I appreciated Andrew's offer for more time when it came to the 3 way near the end. But we were ridiculously behind schedule. So I forfeited. Taking up time is not good sportsmanship. I appreciate the offer, but no one in the same position should have expected that extra time. We need to run a much tighter ship.
With match times displayed on the whiteboard like we did a couple of times, then if your not ready then you forfeit. If you arrive not ready (as I do occasionally) then forfeit the first round in good faith. No fight 1st round after lunch.
Its in all our interests to make it run faster than that.
2. Nick/Grassy. (Begin rant) Its great to see new enthusiastic faces attending our sport. But you need to remember one thing, and that is it is a sport. Its not a game, its not school, they are not toys, you are attending an adult club. Not everyone is over the age of 18, but those that aren't are young adults. If you are going to attend without the supervision of a parent then you need to act like a young adult.
Therefore you need to understand that people have spent countless hours, money and effort in building these machines. People do not appreciate others who have very little knowledge or experience fiddling and playing with their equipment and robots. I started this when I was 19 and I was always respectful to people and always spoke to them about their robot and asked questions rather than play with them. Even Nick politely inspects your robot with his ruler, eyeing it off for damage. I find it very encouraging when Nick gives praise and encouragement as he inspects your robot on how to damage it best. Other people might have been more polite and not said anything when you were doing this, but I'm not exactly one to hold back when its my place. Its not my house, but by golly it is my sport and club and I enjoy the company and pleasure i get from it, I dont appreciate when other detract from it..
Another thing that was also raised to me by other people. Your level of safety is ridiculous. I know Jeff F spoke to you about some things. But I'm going to add with what I observed. Do not angle grind or do any other hot works without observing where you are and what you are doing. You were quite close to people and were grinding an item that was not secure. You were placing Jeff J in a horrible legal and moral position, I'm sure the thought of a severed apendage (of yours) was in the back of his mind when he held the object for you.
You are a newbie, which is not derogatory, it is actually a good tag in some respects. It means that people will be willing to explain things and offer materials and advice. But you have to know who, how and when to ask. Asking people just as they pull their bot out of the arena for assistance is not on. We are not there for you, we are there for our own interests. I've seen great comraderie up in brisbane and melbourne amongst us, but we all still put our own bots first. So only when we have spare time can we assist someone else.
When I first started I didn't know much about construction or electronics, and learned a lot from Lindsay. Now however I've taken that knowledge and can do it by myself, with occsasional assistance from him and others. I still dont know nearly as much as Nick, Glen or Jake and like. If I ever needed something from them I would have to make sure that I was comfortable and was not pushing the friendship. You were pushing the friendship in every way possible yesterday.
In short, please lift your game and act more maturely, similarly to Chirs's son mitch who has always behaved in an appropriate manner and become a really good roboteer himself. If you do not, then I dont think you'll be welcomed back. I hope you do, as you seem to have a great deal of enthusiasm for the sport. You just need to contain it and learn how to be an adult in an adult world. (End Rant)
@Other NSW: To everyone else, please feel free to say otherwise if you see it differently.
