No one comented on our little toy ant weights from the weekend. They wern't that bad.
Daniel's Ant: A 3mm thick piece of grey polycarb about 18cm x 10cm. Under one end I cable tied 2 x 60:1 Copal motors with 2" wheels. At 9V it drove rather nicely. The batterys were cable tied on top and were just some AA batteries from a $2 shop. The controller and reciever were sticky taped above the motors. The weapon was a 5 inch circular saw driven directly from a EFL Park 370 Outrunner Brushless Motor. This motor is sweet. I can truthfully say it'll hit 8000 rpm or more. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't get the blade balanced fully so every time I run it up to speed the robot would start to hover side ways across the floor. The first time I spun it up at the event I noticed everyone take a step backward. For those of you that have seen the video form the weekend I only had the weapon at about 1/4 power. Any more then that and the weapon motor would draw too much current the drive motors would cut out. The interesting thing about the controller for the motor was that it uses the motor as a speaker and plays a little tune when you turn it on.
Unfortuantly I cranked the weapon up to far in the last fight we had on the day with the ant's and ripped a wheel off my brother's robot and cut through his baking tin armour. The hit knocked my robot side ways, ripping one of my own wheels off and breaking one of the Copals. So no more Ant weights for a while. _________________ Get Some!!!

Hey all,
after seeing star wars 3 (wasnt bad) today i went to local hobby shop down road from shops and noticed something which im hoping will work.
Its a very small thing about the size of a mixer or failsafe and it says electronic speed controller. Ratings are 5 amps, upto 8 cell batts (9.6 volts) and BEC and all that fun stuff. Its only for one drive so u will need two for 2 wheel and tank steering etc and v tail mixer.
There only 25$ each. Has anybody else seen something like this because if there both directions (forward and reverse) than ill get two for a beetleweight robot and small bot fun ness.
Just wanted to bring it to your attention just incase anybody else has seen these cheap little units around or has any experience with them or know of them or could help.
If these can be used than it will open up smaller robots to be built well/in wieght limit and for a reasonable price.
Ill also keep u all updated if i get them as to how they go. _________________ Andrew Welch, Team Unconventional Robotics

No unfortunately,
next time i go up there ill ask and have a closer look at the unit and maybe buy it because if it works then that would be soo sweet and i will start building a beetle immediately (noticed a nice cheap, lightish wok for a FBS today) . _________________ Andrew Welch, Team Unconventional Robotics

saw something really cool at target today, they have mini black and decker tools for kids now. there sort of like a 1/2 scale version of the full thing for $13.95...
the ones i saw where a jigsaw and more importantly a 2 speed drill. one was about 120-160rpm at a guess the other was maybe 300rpm. i was gunna pick one up but only had $1 on me so didnt end up getting it heh, might make a nice beetleweight something or another _________________ www.demon50s.com - Minimoto parts

speaking of target toys i work at target here in perth (west coast lol) discounts whoo! but seriously my mate and i are building a robot and we are using dick smiths parts although i did a tafe course this year and we had a whole heap of those little stunt cars. they are about 5cm by 5 cm big and we have fixed a few and we have modded some to make antweights but they are pretty poor atm
im liking the idea of sozbot though because they can be bigger.
lemme know if there are any other peeps from perth here _________________ team X is open for sponsoring
