@ Jake: the motors are here: http://holmeshobbies.com/Revolver-S-Stubby-Sensored-Outrunner.html they are a bit pricey but about what you'd pay for a good name-brand in-runner.

Nice find! I assume you're running them at 6s? How are you planning to deal with the connector poking out the front. Looks like it'll interfere with the gearbox mounting plate.

with regard to the sheer amount of titanium Laughing -

Not running the magnet modules in mr mangle then?

I think the motors will take 6S intermittently, even though they are only rated up to 4S - at least there are no brushes to burn out. Upping the voltage by 50% will increase peak power to 562 watts in theory, but unless the wheels have far more traction than usual, they will spin way before the motors are generating that much power.

To get around the wiring rubbing on the motor's endbell, I will try a small aluminium shroud mounted to the gearbox. The motor is so short that managing the cables will be easy.

Mr Mangle is already on the weight limit, so the magnets can't be fitted - I would really like to try them some day.

I should have a set of the outrunners in less than two weeks and will do a report on them ASAP. The guy who is selling them is a real perfectionist, so the motors are likely to be well made.

Motors look sweet... wonder how theyd compare to 775's on 16:1 at 5cell... ?

Chassis looks smart!... do the ridges on either side of the wedge concern you? Seems like a big bite point... or are there no horizontals in the lightweight class?

The larger 400W version of the motor might be similar to a 775; the KV rating is 50% higher and you'd have to replace the shaft with a 5mm one.

There are at least three horizontal spinners entered so far; that's far less than the number of vertical spinners. The rear corners are a bit of a compromise with the slot 'n tab construction; there has to be an overlap either facing the sides or the rear. I figure that the rear facing overlap will get less hits unless I actually want to use the wedge. There is also the statistics on my side; with only three horizontals, I am only likely to face one of them in the double elimination competition Smile

Jolt:

All the holes in the base plate are countersunk and the magnets are mounted:

After sanding back the epoxy on the magnets, its very obvious they were under filled Sad. That's now fixed with another layer and if the amount of swarf they pick up off the bench is anything to go by, the magnets will have more than enough holding power in the arena.

LOL, by the time I was part way thru each hole, the CS bit was smoking; it probably melted the last Ti layer! More realistically, the CS surfaces look slightly discoloured, there may be a heat generated oxide layer like you get on Ti welds.

Once all the fitting is done, the panels will be hit with a belt sander so that everything is shiny and ready for welding.

Hey Nick, any chance you could measure the length of an XT90 terminal to terminal (with the two halves plugged into each other)? Bought some but they only sent the female connectors Mad

True Grit

I spent the whole day doing nothing but grinding, polishing, linishing and filing robot parts - gritty work indeed! Most of the Ti sheets for Jolt have a very pitted surface, which needs grinding smooth at least along the weld areas. Small parts clean up well on the linisher, while a large belt sander (meant for flooring) works well for the base plate.

The side panels are cut and on their way, while the remaining internal panels should be ready for local pick-up next Wednesday. After that, there will be some fitting and cleaning required before welding; I hope to get that done before March.

The Lightweight division at Robogames now has 27 bots entered, with quite a few new designs that have no photo and no Google or Youtube results (just like Jolt Laughing). Its going to be interesting to see how the new bots perform against the old guard and I'm hoping that most of them are cannon fodder Razz.

Its actually two international events in one week - what was I thinking? I have almost worked out the itinerary and its going to need military precision. Its great to have Glen at the UK event, we can support each other and I will be disappointed if we don't bring a trophy home.
