Depends a bit on who you are fighting.
The Vic and Qld comps aren’t too rough but if you are in Sydney then you need to build something a bit tougher.
Steel checker plate is heavy so you need to keep the bot small.
If it’s small you have little or no crumple zone and a small dent or puncture can cause damage.
Generally small tightly packed bots are hard to work on. G forces from hits are harder on parts in small ridged box type bots.
Some weapon designs will work on high density bots but sometimes a bot has to be large to accommodate a given weapon then a different approach is needed instead of thick metal armour.
Sproing’s pongee stick air armour is a good example of this and ballistics thin skin got dented and torn really bad but the works were so far inside it nothing was ever damaged.

If you are talking about steel checkerplate, then it's pretty strong already and wood will not add anything. Aluminium checkerplate is usually made from a VERY soft alloy and has been a very poor performer in Sydney. Weight for weight in aluminium, you would be better off searching for plain sheet in 6061 or 5083 grades. 5083 is used for boat building and can often be obtained from fabrication and welding businesses in offcuts.
If you are thinking about backing anything up with wood, go for plywood - everything else sucks!
Thin steel over impact resistant plastic like UHMW or chopping board has been very effective in smaller weight classes - it could probably be scaled up for featherweights.
Thin titanium is not all that expensive and much lighter than steel. Back it up with UHMW and put it over a steel tube frame - I think that would go well against almost anything in australia.
BTW: melted cheese doesn't work unless there is an image of the virgin Mary in it _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

well good old jarra length are VERY strong compaired to ply wood of similar size and weight( i very much dout my sister would be alive if the tree that came though last year had landed on plywood support beams, thing landed ontop of her room ) i would have thougth someone would have used it atleast once _________________ For West ausies interested in robotics email me at: theoneshrug@hotmail.com

The ULTIMATE Armour!
2mm Unobtainium! Very cheap, generally easy to work with. Stronger then Steel, Titanium and Aluminium. Ultra lightweight, around the same as Carbon Fibre. _________________ https://www.halfdonethings.com/

Hmmm, if we were fighting in the Sydney comp like 6 times a year and one or two big interstate comps where everyone tries really hard we might have to give up on our shiny steel look and resort to a combination of tyre rubber, foam, polycarb, aluminium and air.

A tough, wear resistant plastic that combines an incredibly low coefficient of friction with outstanding impact strength. This self-lubricating polymer has excellent chemical resistance and a broad temperature range making it the perfect choice for engineers in a variety of industries such as conveyor and bulk material handling.

Just something you can't be taught about bunnings grade ali checker plate...
This was my bot from two events ago called roadkill (with beetle roadsmear on top) The top and base was made from 2 or 3mm ali checkerplate.
In the impacts combat robots are subject to, metals that thin (and crap) can bend like thin paper... and stay bent, unlike amour like polycarb. _________________ ( •_•)
Been thinking about this armour sitch what with the interstaters coming for Robowars and the possibility of lots of nasties at UltiBot’s.
Unafordium and Unoptanium are ok up to a point but I think Adamantine [Krell] Steel is the go.
Anyone know of a local supplier, Altair is a bit out of the way.

My defence is based on the CDS (Chicken Defence System). Its philosophy is run away, run away. Hopefully the other robot gets a cardiac failure within 3 minutes trying to catch you. _________________ Bots that do not destroy you, only make you stronger.

Some of the Dwargar were selling 1lb bars of Adamantine for around 300GP. I prefer Mythril myself, but usually can't afford it _________________ https://www.halfdonethings.com/
