ANT weight anyone ?

Question Anyone interested in ANT weight ? The rules I've found are as follows: ***1sq.meter arena with a drop off at the edge - any robot falling off has lost
***150grams for wheeled, 225grams for walkers
***no acids or voltages over 24V
***no fluid, glue or string weapons
***no metal to be used in the armour
***bouts go for 120 seconds
***hold or pin for 20seconds
***no untethered weapons - projectiles must not exceed a range of 90centimeters
***no explosives or pyrotechnic detonators, wicks, candles or napalm
***outside manipulation not permitted
***must be able to fit into a 4cubic inch box - when off or in safe mode (may extend beyond the 4cubic inch dimension when ready to fight)

It would be a cheap class to compete in and build, besides the smaller area required to hold tournaments. Kind of like the ultimate beginers class or test bed for bigger ideas.

If interested, check out WWW.realrobots.com site Issue 29 . Issue 49 & 50 have building ideas for an ANT as well.

LOOKS LIKE ALOT OF FUN

contact aaron, hes got a little antweight happening.

those things are shockingly expensive for what they are though, youll probably spend more than a featherweight on the little things lol.

good luck and welcome to the forum btw!

Antweights in the USA are built to different specs that help keep the price down. Maximum weight is 1 pound (454 grams), metal armor is fine, and the arena is larger and bounded by a low wall except for a couple of 'exit slots' in two of the walls.

Many competitors are converted R/C toys, although some are full laser-cut titanium wonders.

For more info on rules, try: http://www.sozbots.com

There are also some more interesting competitions starting up for antweight 'bots. See the rules for 'Antbotica' at: http://www.open.org/joerger/antbotica.pdf

I saw that on your site a while back. That will be so cool. Robotica has to be one of my favourite shows. I wish they showed all episodes. out here

I'm open to increasing the weight a bit (perhaps 250grams) and including metal armour, but I just want to battle with them - not do a driving test like a lot of ant weight competitions do. My background is in RC car racing and if I want to just drive I can do that at a race track.
The main attraction to ant weight for me is you can use (slightly altered) standard radio gear for the drive motors and weapons.

I suggest you go for the SOZ Bot sizes and rules. That pommy rules with the 10cm cude size limit is more of a problem then the weight. And if you keep changing the pommy rules to make it cheaper then you might as well use the the SOZ Bot rules. SOZ Bots don't have the size limitations. You'd need 2 $50 servo's for the pommy drive motors or one of those duel Tamya gearboxes from Dick Smithes for $15 for the SOZ drive motors. Your choice really.

sozbots r much better than 150 gram pommy antweights.

Go to www.sozbots.com for more info and happy building.

Antweights are probably the greatest challenge I've seen on robot combat so far. being so small in size and weight makes building them hard.

If a sozbots comp gets going, I certainly wouldn't mind building one

After having a good look around at both antweight and sozbot sites, here's some thoughts...
Sozbot is looking alot more competitive because of the extra weight, metal armour, etc.
But as for the radio gear vs Dick Smiths gear kits, I suppose it depends on whether or not you already have radio gear. Since I have only wheel radios for my RC cars, I need a radio set for multi-channel control for robot combat. Most of the radio gear these days come as a complete set (Tx, RX, servos, switch and battery pack) for the cost of the transmitter and reciever alone. There is a new brand of radio gear in the country - 3.8kg torque metal geared servos (weighing 45 grams) that retail for less then $35 ! Future 'bots will probably use gear sets from Dick Smith's...

So for a place to start, put me down for Sozbot !

Confused I just noticed that SOZbot is not a recognized size (and weight) by FRA rules.
Isn't Australia in line with the FRA? Do we run FRA antweight or SOZbot ?
Any thoughts? I'll happily do eithor but would rather do whichever will end up with the most competitors / competition.... which seems to be SOZbot from the previous feedback...

well if your after competition its featherweights your after, but i for one would like to see a smaller weight class get of its feet. though i think 150g robots are way out of the question when your looking at like $100 for a basic two wheeled antweight. i would far rather a sozbot, although mind you i was not happy having bought an $80 sozbot controller only to have it explode.... lol.

as for the FRA no we dont follow their rules, dont think we have an official ruleset either, just the basic and obvious points such as weight etc and safety guidelines.
