This would by why you would want to launch planes.

But that wasn't what the origional question was about. It was about trying to slow the plane down, not launch it.

And if you look at the results of that National IQ test they did on TV with the results of the american version, you'll notice at least a 5 IQ point differance between australians and americans. But we may of had different tests, so don't go around taking that literally. Heck I got a 28 point differance between the first version of the show and the second version.

BTW, is your full stop button broken?

I just downloaded a few of the latest episodes of mythbusters and they based an episode around this argument. I remembered this thread and couldn't resist reviving it.
For those who can't remember and don't want to read back through the pages the myth is that a plane on a conveyor belt that is matching its speed in reverse will not take off. After testing this with a RC plane and a treadmill Adam and Jamie tried it full size with an ultralight on a very long length of tarp toed by a ute. As the plane throttled up the ute pulled the tarp from under the plane. The pilot was convinced that his plane would not move but it in fact performed a perfectly normal take off. Myth Busted!

For those who want to watch look for season 6 episode 3.
