Its certainly a buzz.. The flying armchair is one of the most exciting things I've done in life.

A lot of work though. about $12k to build, $2k to learn, and about 1 year of time to build and train.. and you need to keep your wits about you. a lot of guys die from being stupid when you are thumbing your nose at the force of gravity.

I'm glad I did it though. Sitting in an 100km/hr open chair 500 feet up over the beach as the sun sets on a warm day in a T-Shirt and shorts makes you feel like king of the world. Cool

Its ok, this is the off-topic area.. you're free to ramble about anything you like in here, especially when the original thread topic has died out now anyway..

@jeff. I'm not sure whether my being alive after years of Gyro flying is just good luck, or skill and care. probably a bit of both. I tried very hard to do everything properly and not take too many stupid chances. Of course there were a few moments here and there where either it seemed like good luck that saved me. A couple of close calls with power lines and the like.

a favourite saying of Chuck Yeagers (famous airplane test pilot for any youngin's who dont recognise the name) - "A Superior Pilot uses his superior judgement to avoid getting into situations that require the use of his superior skill"

But hey, everything in life is risky, risk is unavoidable, its trying to avoid the avoidable risk and saving your luck for the unavoidable risk that is the trick.. Smile

About your Heli. Helicopters crash.. just like planes but even more so.. Its something you have to get use to.

Another saying I like.. "The fundamental difference between an Airplane and a Helicopter is that airplanes *want* to fly, and unless interfered with too badly by the pilot (or the ground), will do so all by themselves.. smooth and level. Helicopters do *not want* to fly, and require the constant unremitting attention of the pilot to keep them somewhere they do not want to be (in the air). Give the just a moment of distraction and they will immediately head for the place they want to be (the ground) without asking twice"

But thats what makes them such a buzz to fly. (from the safety of the remote control anyway). I'm getting better.. only 1 crash in the last month.. Smile

And this is from the second post in the thread, explaining why I posted the question.

quote:
Sorry, found this on the RFL forum. Apperntly its also on the Mythbusters forum where 70% of people say the plane won't take off.

And looking at that. 70% of americans compared to 12% of Australians. Ok, the sample size for us is too small, but it still makes you feel good.
