I wonder about the practicality of putting a counter rotating disk in there to null out the gyro forces, you can reduce its mass/size if you increase its RPM and if you don't put any teeth on it you shouldn't need uber bearings

Huge pile of dead weight there unless you can adequately slave the two disks together. Some brushless driven turbo compressor as a vacuum hold down was something i was looking at towards the end Smile

Getting the counteracting disk spinning in the opposite direction will take some extra engineering; either gears or a serpentine belt. Its also going to take twice the energy and need a larger motor and battery; that will still apply if the disk's mass is decreased and the RPM increased.

How about that dual disk bot Counter Revolution at Battlebots? Do the disks need to be on the same axle to counteract each other or just in the same plane? The bot didn't do well at Battlebots but at least both disks are active weapons.

in theory just the same bot would do
but you may get some funky moments the further they are apart

re KE do you really care that much is the other question?

I wouldn't do gears or anything mechanical to join them, when the weapon stops the force from the spinning disk wouldn't be nice

You could do it easily with bevel gears (I'd use car center diff gears).
Sorry for the horrible diagram. Yellow = spur gears, Red = Flywheel A, Blue = Flywheel B, Green = input shaft.

or a twisted belt drive akin to that in a Greenfield Ride on mower.

Main constraint is anything will need to remove weight from the weapon itself and structure putting it at some inherent advantage vs horizontal robots. I did really want to make some super high speed internal flywheel but didn't have the skills at the time.

Someone should do it though!

How about varying the speed of the disc with the steering input. Question

Probably too much inertia for it to respond rapidly and a bit wasteful, maybe if you put it on needle bearings and had some friction material instead of thrust washers that could do it Razz

Zac' Odonnel had one based on friction but I cannot find the picture so I drew how it works.
picture will not upload,
just like Knights drawing except for the bevel gear it has a colson wheel

This one? https://picasaweb.google.com/107279152885550274671/ThreecoilBB2014

Similar to Counter Revolution would be Charles Guan's Stance Stance Revolution http://www.etotheipiplusone.net/?p=3760

Other thing you could do is use a larger pulley/bevel on the weapon disk and a smaller one for a high speed counterweight.

If you want to counter the gyro of the weapon, you'll have to put in the same amount of energy in the anti-gyro.

Meaning, even if you go for a seperate smaller, lighter, faster anti-gyro disk, you're using weight to contain all that force ,as well batterypower.

With as second issue: "what if the weapondisk slows down by impact"?

If its smaller but if its coupled to weapon than its just like a flywheel putting energy into it when it takes a hit. So I wouldn't really see it as a negative. If its also not taking hits then you can make it a bit less robust so doesnt use as much weight there. And because smaller diam uses less weight at the cost of higher friction when spinning.
