Hey guys question for ya.

I have a dual voice coil sub 4 ohms per coil wired in series for 8 ohms.

The sub is rated 250 watts rms. "Jaycar 10" precision response carbon fibre"

The amp is bridged 500watts rms 4 ohms. "Jaycar precision response"

Can anyone tell me when the gain is set to full the rms going to the sub?

If im doing it right then 500 watts rms 4ohm amp with an 8 ohm load will push 250 watts rms 8 ohm to the sub which is rated 250 watts rms 8 ohm matching the sub.

It sounds clear as a bell and the amp stays warm not hot also i have set the gain to 90% just so the amp is not running full power.

generally you'll get a bit more than half your 4ohm RMS power into an 8ohm load, due to there being less sag on the power rails.

So you should get a bit over 250w at full power, which is fine as long as you're not driving it into distortion.
Speakers can usually handle way more than their rated power as long as they stay cool. An overloaded amp will put a lot of DC through the speaker when it's clipping, which heats it up and cooks the voice coil.

To quote an old Jaycar catalog, you're more likely to kill a 100w speaker with a 10w amp than a 10w speaker with a 100w amp.

I run 300wrms rated speakers at 600w with no issues - and before that I was running 120w speakers at 600w until someone unplugged a mic while the amp was at full gain and one of the speakers blew Razz

I have noticed car speakers whatever the brand rated over 50w even 100w can still distort when the head unit is up full its like the head unit can only just push its rated power why is this?

One thing that is worth checking is the power cables running to the sound system are sufficiently large enough so the voltage doesn't sag. That will cause distortion and clipping which will kill the speakers.

My head unit i have in my car gose to 60 i can get to 55 before it starts to sound a little high pitchy distortion but not much depending on the music sometimes none but bye then who needs that extra 5 volume.

The speakers are 100rms would it be worth trying to re wire the car or would it make little improvement for the extra little bit.

If i could set gain on the head unit it would be good just means people in my car will not be able to turn it up full.

Get an oscilloscope (the boxes that plug into a laptop are good value if you only need it occasionally) and have a look at the audio signals on the screen.

Clipping, Distortion, Noise, Hum and Voltage sag are instaantly visible and much easier to find and fix. You're working in the dark if you cant see the signals you are trying to amplify.

most head unit amps won't reach full volume before they start clipping, especially if the power wiring isn't 100%, so if it's not loud enough you'll really need a bigger amp.

Car speakers can also distort due to inadequate damping when they're mounted in doors or larger open areas like a parcel tray.
Generally, the smaller and more sealed the enclosure they're in, the more power they'll handle without distortion. (there is an optimum size for best bass response though)

Remember not to go too loud. You should not have to raise your voice to talk to the person next to you otherwise you will be doing damage to your hearing. Ringing and the numb feeling in the ears are signs of damage. Repeated exposure will lead to permanent loss.

Its plenty loud just you know how friends will always play with the radio and turn it right up which is not really good for the speakers if the head unit clips. I tend to only turn it up to about 40 and thats plenty thanks guys.

On a side tangent of electronic music, found this really cool laser harp. Guy has spent a fair few years getting it to work. Sounds really nice!

I'm interested in putting one on my back burner list using a Thinkgeek green laser pointer, a wii mote, a atmega168 Baby-O and some photo diodes on a frame Razz Maybe after I finish my Rubines tube first Razz
