HUNGRY HUNGRY ROBOT

Very Happy well this is one of courtney and lindsays ideas i hope this is what it is
1.2 robots in the arena in
2. in 2 diagonally opposite corners there is a type of small goal ,[i will make them up to suit ]
3. a huge ammount of golf balls is sent rolling into the arena
4. the idea is to get as many golfballs into your hole as possible in the 3 minutes time limit
5. at the end of the game the balls are weighed and the most weight wins the round

so i guess this is another event where the armour can be removed and a special aperatious fitted to suit the game ,i wouldnt like to see 1m long bars fitted to your robots that wouldnt be fair .maybe a 300mm wide restriction be placed on scoops ,bars and shovels just to keep it sensible just an idea nothing definate ,please respond with thoughts and ideas

Chris basically sums it up there

we would remove the corner floor tiles and replace them with some made of mdf or the like, with a hole cut in with a bucket mounted underneath to catch the balls.

So the bot that gets the most balls down its own goal wins.
We also tossed around ideas of having say 25 balls, but 5 are a different colour and worth more points, so you can go for the high score ones or just try and get as many balls in as possible.

Anyway this build day we can test out some ideas and see what will work best.

Not sure about robot dimensions or scoops and the like...

I plan on entering speed bump, so thats already naturally pretty wide!

come on people, feedback!

The only thing I can think of is that the hole should be pretty small so our bots don't drop a wheel down it and get stuck! otherwise, excellent idea and I am looking at modding an old chassis to compete with Very Happy

Feedback? OK,,, Actually, the corner tiles are welded in Shocked as are the first two rows on all sides Embarassed There are 81 tiles on the floor,9x9. I`m sure you can find a couple of others to lift out Very Happy Tiles are 900mm. 3MM MDF would do, any thicker would rise above the other tiles. The bucket itself could help support the tile. The crawl space is 250mm deep.

OK, I have a golf ball gulping bot designed (called Gulp, obviously Smile ). Now where do I get some cheap test golf balls?

With the replacement tiles, I can make some 900 x900 MDF tiles and we can test fit them at the build day; we may need to strengthen them and thin the edges for smooth driving.

No problems - a golf ball is about 4 cm across isn't it? I had better get working on a frame and motors then...

Are we still sticking with 13.6 Kg for this and the other events? Its just that I had a crazy idea for an active golf ball collector and need to know much weight I have to play with.

@ Jeff: I will cut out two 600 squares and we can trim them for a tight fit on the build day. Any objection to painting them brightly?

so Nick raises another question

I always though of this event as robots with scoops pushing balls into their goals, but Nick had the idea of an active ball collecting robot.

So the question is do we make it passive ball moving robots only or allow ones with active pickups?

the only downside to the active pickup is that originally we thought of the idea as something everyone could add a scoop to their bots and compete, or build a custom bot. Once active pickups are involved does it make it harder for the modified normal bots to compete?

and how to work the ball collection, if Nicks bot can collect the golf balls it then has to be able to regurgiate them into the goal....

anyway some thoughts...

plus the plan was to keep the 13.6kg limit

i think id be fine to allow active and passive types, so long as the active ones couldnt suck up all the balls at once, drive over to the goals and dump them all out..

say it can only take and launch one ball at a time...

Very Happy LOL ill just rc the electrolux holds up a bowling ball according to mr godfreys
but seriously ,i think we go with glens last comment as for the weight if we try to stay a couple of kg over thats ok i reckon 15 to 16 kg wouldnt be an issue ,but if we go any bigger the bots will get huge and a bit over the top
if a tile is used a row in off the arena wall that would be good a driver can go off the backboard that way Wink as for the wheel thing nick bbrought up i guess all ytou design gurus would have to look at that one but do try and make it so a ball can roll in the from all 360 degrees

This event seems the most popular, judging from the number of posts Smile .

My entry is almost finished already - Gulp is built entirely out of spare parts and the frame is all wood and plastic. It has 4 drill motors for drive and a huge (for me) 650mm wheel base. It's still only 9.5 Kg at the moment, so there is plenty of capacity for an active golf ball catcher.

My catcher design doesn't really fit into Glen's idea - The bot would still have to drive over a ball to catch it and the active part doesn't have anything to do with releasing the balls at the goalpost. I probably don't need it anyway - the passive scoop is looking good enough already.
