IBC.. Capacitor has a big crack.

Hello all..

I need some help.. I not to sure what could of happened since I was not there… Well my team has a IBC controller, and something tragic happened, for what was describe I believe that the polarities were mixed. I am wondering what could have caused the 2200uf 63v Capacitor to actually break apart on the top Sad . I was told that it started to smoke… I would like to know you theory on this?

Thank You all in advance..

That happened to me as well - just after I accidentally reversed the battery polarity. The electrolyte has boiled inside the cap and blown the end off which is a design for that part.

You may also have burnt a track off the underside of the PCB. Its easy to repair with some solid copper wire. You can replace the cap yourself as well, although the part is quite hard to find. Don't use a lower voltage cap and try to get one designed to burst. If you have the same problem again, an odrinary cap will build up higher pressure and the whole case will split and cover the IBC in foil.

You wil also have carefully clean the whole circute board with a suiatable circit board cleaner as the eletrolite from the cap can short out the board after its repaired
