Is having design competitions for bots to do a specific task a good idea?

Bot builders challenge!

Hey, had alittle idea last night... Very Happy Just thinking that a good little side thing at our events could be a design challenge (ie, make something that can pick up an egg without breaking it and bring itback to you. most ideas should be able to be stuck on your existing bots. Just alittle idea that i think would be pretty fun. If there's enough interest, I have a pretty simple, yet challenging idea i'd like to try out and get others to. Very Happy
Think of it as a "next step" challenge if you've already got a really compeditive robot and find yourself sitting around. Tell me your ideas!
Very Happy

I think he means "What are they ?"

An idea dreamed up by bored American Bot Builders to use the spare Heavyweight Bot parts they had lying around, and probably inspired by someone riding around on top of their heavyweight bot..

Basically a baby electric Go-Kart.

I forget the rules, I think it has to fit in a 4ft x 4ft sqaure, which usually means the builders are perched precariously on top with various body parts sticking out resulting in amusing spills'n'thrills as they try and race around and negotiate obstacles/ramps etc.

Personally I think its a silly idea, because as long as the goal is racing (ie, who comes first), then they're just going to gradually get faster and faster as people put E-Teks and other ultra-powerful motors in their Nar Karts which means you'll be more and more likely to eventually get someone seriously injured when they come off their Nar-KArt at 50km/hr into a pole.

But then again, the Americans will race Bar-Stools, Lawn-Mowers, Caravans and just about anything else you can sit on, so its not surprising. Rolling Eyes

They're probably fun as long as they're kept in the spirit of fun, but as soon as people start "getting competitive", I reckon people are going to get hurt..

heh there was an etek powered sled in the first narket race, twas pretty intense.

most of them are powered by huge black max motors that are > 2.5hp and go at something like 20mph.

im not sure how fast those little go karts at sidetracked went but if thats the sort of speed they go at which i think it is i can feel narkarts being damn funny.

lmao nah you just a girls blouse Razz , or maybe its just one too many stacks from BMX that have destroyed my brain..

one other thing im almost totally prepared for at the moment is battleboats, twin 775 motors and soon little pumps in the base so whoever wants to surrender there pool ill be waiting hehe

btw heres the latest narkart race - http://www.teamcosmos.com/moto05/karts.wmv

the etek sled is in there, a guy with a cannon ball helmets riding it and it looks like a plank of wood basically.

NARKARTS!!?? w00t!!

How long do the bats have to last? Im allso thinking of building one myself.

I think the egg thing would be too easy. Same as say a hobby weight pushy bot only with a claw that has lots o foam on it so it wont crush the egg.

narcarts eh? maybe... the egg thing was just a simple example i thought of. My original plan was to start something like they have in america where, for example, you had to design and build an rc submaring that could extract a liquid 3m underwater! (the winning sub was the cheapest and was built by high school students with pvc tube, computer parts and used tampons to plug up its multiple leaks by the way! Beating a team of uni students who had $8000 US funding! )

Anyway, as i said, if there's enough interest!

Smile

Well, if anyone wants a go in their free time;
http://www.ornithopter.org/
ORNITHOPTERS..... hmm, interesting... though really difficult to build and fit with rc equipment....

THE CHALLENGE:
<MAKE AN ORNITHOPTER DRIVEN CAR AND RACE IT OVER A 10m coarse to get the quickest time...>
(told ya it would be fun and cheap!) Very Happy

Limitations;
>Must not use more than 9v
>No rc equipment needed, just add a switch to it so it's either on or off.
>must fit into a 30cm cube, with wings no longer than 30cm.
>multiple wings are alowed, but are apparently very hard to make.
>Any weight alowed, but remember heavier means more pushing power needed... Smile

All info you'd need is on that site.
Will update you.
Have fun!
