While I like the arena-obstacles idea, I think Kill-Saws, Pulverisers etc are a bad-idea..

As Gary put it, the bots are there to fight each other, not the Arena.

a 20 litre drum sitting there cant do much damage, a starter-motor powered wrecking saw definitely would.

It would put things *too* much on the advantage of the pushy-bots side.

Why bother to put a weapon on your bot, when there's a much bigger, more powerful one than you have the weight to do sitting just over in the corner for you to use ?

That encourages people to build bots like New-Cruelty, which while having 1 or 2 of them in a comp is good for variety, having powerful arena-hazards would encourage them too much I think.

My feeling is that for optimum 'bot evolution, the environment (arena) should be interesting (variable terrain, obstacles etc), but passive (no weapons).

Perhaps a pit that only opens during the last minute of the match *IF* activated by a bot-pressed trigger , but thats about as far as I'd go in making the environment hostile.

Arena hazards are good for spectacular shows, but bad for fair competition.

Too slow, pnumatics would be better.
Why not have more fun fights too? like soccer? That would be interesting with all the spinners!
Jeff, will we have a pit this comp? Smile

i was going to make a seperate little floor tile with a frame underneath it and just have the saws jump up with bike pumps about 15mm from the floor so they could probably just cut into the base a little taking into account ground clearances. i figure small bike pumps shouldnt go up with a huge amount of force if there just powered right off a little 120psi compressor.

i seriously doubt the likes of nick and jake and other budding spinner builders will abandon their plans for big assed weapons in favour of using a baby saw in the floor.

and we can rip out the unit and drop jeffs pit box thing in if thats wanted.

They should be activated by a switch in the arena, so that one bot could activate it to get the other. (sort of like the pit in robot wars.)

they did that at the NPC event, it worked like a charmer i thought.
