"Ausbot" - outdoors

This is kind of related to the thoughts kicking around about the non-flat multi-terrain arena being planned for events, such as Robowars at sidetracked, for the middleweights (and larger).

I called it Ausbot just for a quick reference name more than anything... call it what you want.

Since it is easy to find a bit of un-even land (with a few kinds of surface such as grass, dirt, logs, etc) almost anywhere in this fine country, why not start exploring multi-terrrain combat outdoors?
Of course safety is an issue, so no spinners would be allowed, and to prevent a huge jump from feathers to middleweight, maybe lightweight bots could be the answer...

Besides perhaps a low bot-retaining fence to keep the fights in one dedicated place, little else is required to set up. Besides general melee fighting, I was wondering about having a square in the middle of the 'arena' (made out of railway sleepers for example) where you could put an opponent to end the fight with a TKO - similar to the pit in some overseas arenas.

Thoughts / ideas anyone ?

well about 10 mins away from me is a large dirt off road bike track and a dirk rc car track. both could be used but people form the public use them whenever (especially the bike track) so it would be tricky.

Well, it think the thoughts of this being only for middleweight was because anything bellow is too small for a proper off road drive chain, not that i wouldn't like to give it a go...(at least it would mean i could test my bot anywhere apart from the perfect flat arena! Very Happy
Also, why not go the full way and add puddles, sand pits and obsticals like rocks? Confused Very Happy

Actully you can have spinners
Just you need to have poly around them rather than the robots and it needs to be somewhere without people around

I can't wait till we do something like that and would turn ko into a offroad robot as soon as I could if we had a event like it

You could go mythbusters style and have a small viewer box, in a sparsly populated area.

How many robot builders can you pack into a 3m x 3m polycarb box?

Dificult to think of a weapon for off-road use since the robot must have a fairly high ground clearence. hmmmm..

You could make it bigger... just would be cheaper and easier than surounding the arena. I think the whole concept of this would bring out alot of inovation in the robot community!

I would be very interested in building a four wheel drive offensive mars rover . It would be fun driving over dirt hills and coming down with a saw blade "Scoopy style".
I`m thinking of a four legged, four wheeled scorpion idea. Twisted Evil

PS; this is not really the apropriate thread for this topic. We should continue in General Chatter Very Happy

We are working on it. The economics are tough, and the technology needed to fight in big arenas is tough - but we did some end-to-end tests today that show promise.
