jaycar selling cheap car chargers

just to let you know that jaycar is now selling really cheap car chargers at the moment.

an 8amp version is only $30 which would be real handy as a power supply or an sla charger if you regulate it.

Wasnt sure where to put this so this is close enuff.

Saw a power supply at JayCar a couple of days ago that was a 13.8 volts at 20 amps - ideal for maximum charging from a triton. Price is just under 100 bucks.
Thought is sounded ok so am considering it as my 5 amp power supply well is a little slooooooooowwwwwww.
Does that sound like a good deal anyone, its a switchmode unit, doesnt seem to be listed in their manual so figure its a nu product.

seems a lil steep, the computer markets here sell 10 amp supplies for $5-10 and jake has a really high power one (20-30amps) that wasnt much more than 30 IIRC.

you should have a look to see if youve got any computer markets around your area george, the ones at north rocks here are awesome.

A simple little trick to run your triton with a less than grunty power supply...

Put a small SLA in parallel with the power supply.

The Triton only draws current in bursts, and you only charge your 'bot batteries for 1/2hr to 1hr (at high currents), so the SLA will hold the voltage up during the high power loads, then when the Triton has finished, the 5amp charger will top the SLA back up.

You might want a diode between your SLA charger and your SLA to stop power backfeeding when you turn the charger off.. this will lower the output voltage .6-.8v which means the SLA will never reach full charge, but it will be close enough for this job.

It also means your Triton wont reset in the middle of your charge cycle if someone accidentally unplugs you or you overload your PSU.

Works for me..
