You'll have to wait until I get my license & my car for me to get up there, Roleystone's too inconvinient to blag a lift for just watching RW videos at this stage.

Remember, there are some of us in the actual suburbs. Razz

definitely.. build robots first.

remember the saying "if you build it, they will come"...

When Gary and I started building Combat bots, we thought we were the only ones in Australia.. much like the Vertex Team did. Put together a few bots, (The first models never even got to fight properly), and hey look where we are just a year or so later..

Hi, folks. Thought I'd log in and introduce myself. Umm, Andrew Campbell Wink

Anyway, a group of us started an organisation called ACRA (Australian Combative Robot Association) a few years ago, and were quite involved in putting together a schools based, curriculum supported, robot competition in WA. We had 24 schools gagging to be involved (From all areas of the Perth school Spectrum, State and Private schools) The Competition was called Ausbots. We had affiliate support from the BattleBots and Robot Wars groups, and were in discussion with Robot Wars (Well, Mentorn) about starting a Robot Wars competition in Australia.

Unfortunately, the whole insurance / personal liability rubbish that expoded a few years ago put paid to the competition, although we are hopeful of getting something organised when the State government gets around to legislating on the matter.

I was building an 80KG Heavyweight crushing bot called Avatar (Using Hydraulic rams supplied by Pressure Dynamics in Welshpool). Sort of a 'Razor' design. If there are opponents out there, I am happy to finish it. Another of the team was building a flipper bot, and a third was planning a flywheel based kinetic weapon for his ( think HypnoDisk)

If you have any queries about the comp we had planned, or want advice, then feel free to get in touch.

Andrew Campbell.

Do you have any arenas that will cope with heavy KE weapons? We all mainly build feathers (13.6 kg according to the Americans).

The comp arena was going to be 12mm Polycarbonate 12m x 12m x 2m with a levelled polycarbonate floor. The components were designed in 2m2 sections for the walls, and 1m2 sections for the flooring. The design was such that we could make it any shape we wanted, so long as the max area didn't go over 144 square metres. The advantage was that it was easy to build extra sections and make it as large as we wanted.
We wanted the arena to be transportable, quick to assemble, and able to be set up in areas that would normally be off limits due to folks not wanting their floors destroyed (such as basketball courts, shoppingcentres, etc) Four men could (should have been able to ) set it up in about 2 hours.
The design featured a mesh roof for incidental projectiles, lighting and low scale smoke generators (not enough to obscure vision of the bots)

Unfortunately, although we had a commitment for the $12,000 sponsorship for the arena, we held off building it until the insurance aspect was taken care of.....hence no arena.
