I was prompted to upgrade ubuntu to 11.04 and followed the prompts. After rooting and being told I don't have the hardware to run Unity it now just boots to a black screen with a mouse pointer. No other input works. No options in grub to revert back to 10.10. Any ideas or do I need to do fresh install?

In GRUB, can you tell it to boot in recovery mode at one of the last kernals?

EDIT: What are your computers specs? Make? Model? Hardware?

Too late. I did a fresh install from a live cd. I don't know the specs as the computer was made from parts of three other computers I pulled out of the bin as my company is too tight to get me a computer. That's also why I have the only non Windows machine in the building.

Personally, I don't find Unity too bad. Pretty spiffy, and fairly easy to work once you understand the basics. Has a few foibles that could do with some work, like managing several windows from a single program (aMSN, Virtualbox etc etc).

For such a big change to the way users interface with Ubuntu, I'm enjoying the experience. From my side of the fence, out of 3 installations on 3 different lots of hardware, I've had zero bugs or crashes.

Alright yet another wireless lan problem.

Every computer in the house (about 5) including ipad works flawlessly on the wireless network, except mine thats decided it doesnt want to work at all over the last week. wired works fine.

Its always connected to the network apparently but msn constantly crashes and webpages rarely load and if they do its ultra slow. The only error windows throws up is:

"Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding"

Ive tried stuff all really cause i have no idea, but turning off every other comp bar this one does nothing and removing hamachi made no difference (thought that might have been the problem as its rooted my wireless before)

thanks yuh.

.....open a command shell
start, run, cmd
....( if you are running xp - bit tricker on win 7)
ipconfig
....check default gateway address
ping -t <default gateway address> (starts a constant ping to your router)

watch ping times, make sure no dropouts. If you are getting dropouts or ultraslow pings to your router, and another computer isnt (do same proceedure on it), sounds like it could be your wifi card.

Unless you're running vista or 7, in which case it might have kindly auto-updated your wifi driver and fragged it for you. - reinstall wifi driver from original maybe

if your ping to the router is fine (constant and low), then you check dns settings etc after that

That Nokia thing is a POS, get rid of it.
It slows computers down no end and stuffs about with the network settings to try to use the phone as a modem. I remove it from peoples computers all the time and suddenly "Ah its running much better now"

Monitor recommendation?

I just had a bunch of pixels fail on one of my moniors and its time for an update. I have been pretty happy with Samsung in the past and haven't been watching new monitor technology. So, what do people think is hot right now?
