narva 6 pin connectors

just changed cobra over to the 6 pin connector on the IBC but have got a little problem.

in a fit of pure genius i put one of the female connectors into the socket to see which way it was supposed to go in (up or down..) and now the thing is wedged inside the socket!?

any ideas on how to get it out? brett? dont care if i lose the connector itself

If you look at one of the connectors you haven't pushed in yet, you will see there is a little "tang" sticking out of one side.. like a barb on a fish-hook. This is the bit that locks the connector into the housing.

Look at the front of the connector (opposite end to where the wires come out), and you will see a narrow groove down the same side that the tang goes on. this is the bit that the tang locks into.

What you need is a very small jewellers style flat screwdriver (or other piece of rigid flat metal that fits in the groove) that you can poke down there and flatten the tang out so it can slide but out without catching in the groove. It will take some fiddling so be patient.

Also, make sure that there is no rearwards pressure on the connector while you are prodding.. in fact its best to push it in more while you try and flatten the tang, otherwise it will just dig into the plastic and part will flatten, but the end will stay bent up and keep it locked. Sometimes you need to keep downwards pressure on the tang with your screwdriver while you pull it out backwards.

Once you have it out, you can generally straighten out the tang, bend it back up so its sticking out like the other ones and re-use it. as long as you didnt munch it up too much getting it out. Be careful no to damage the plastic groove too much with your prodding or the next connector wont have a nice groove to lock into and will fall out easily.

Just a note for anyone that has the same problem with connectors with round pins. the process for removing can be the same.

But I have found if you get a small copper tube (steel or Alum will work) from the hobby shop that the pin just fits into, and slide it over the pin you wish to remove. making sure that you have pushed it far enough to hold the tabs in. then have a rod that hits inside the tube and push the pin out.

This is a no fuss way to remove round pins.
