Has anyone actually broken one of these belts (as opposed to having it cut by an opponent)? The belts are normally used to haul a person and the scooter with batteries (60Kg let's say) up & down slopes. It should stand up to quite a bit of abuse in just a 13.6Kg robot, particularly if there are two or four motors doing the driving.

If anyone is worried about breaking the belt, its probably easier to convert them to chain drive rather than spur gears, plus you get a wider range of reduction choices.

Has anyone ever been able to remove the sprocket from one of the 100W Oatley scooter motors? I had a go and mine seem to be glued on Sad

Spur gears are much lighter then chain and sprocket and don't get affected by g-force in spinner hits. Plus with Spurs giving me from 12t-80t, I can choose a hundred odd gearing configurations, and this is only using MOD 1 gears.

I'm having a little dificulty getting the pully off the motor too Nick, I'm looking at the hammer in a few mins Evil or Very Mad

No, I meant the metal sprocket on the motor shaft. The shaft has a circlip on the end but on my motors, taking that off did nothing - there seemed to be epoxy glue on the motor shaft and the sprocket just wasn't going to come off without a fight!

You can convert the plastic wheel to chain drive pretty easily by slicing off the moulded sprocket and screwing on a chain sprocket with a spacer behind it to hold it off the wheel body. You would get higher power transmission at the cost of extra weight. The other advantage with chain is that you can make it any length you need.

I managed to get one off. I heated up the shaft, and it burnt the glue off, then tapped the pully off (with a bit of damage and some large force Razz)

The motor looked okay, but when I tried to turn the shaft it was very stiff. I stripped it down and it seems the top skateboard bearing is a bit retarded now. So will replace both motor bearings with some spare ABEC-3's i have here somewhere. Getting the top bearing off with out damaging the windings might be fun Confused if it's a hassle, I'll just order a new one.

uaully Just a bit of gentle heat with a propane torch lets the sprocket come of the scooter motor easily.

ReBoot had a good chance of winning against plan B up until one of the drive belts broke, were running the belts tighter in ReBoot as we had trouble with the belts in mini mower striping the teeth.

We will try some Polyurethane and Kevlar to strengthen the drive belts in ReBoot..

Dont have a torch of sorts so In these situations just clamp the motor in a work horse and grind the top of the gear flat, turn it 180 degrees and grind the opposite end flat. eventually it will crack off.
Its pretty hard metal so will take a few minutes but it gets the job done.
Keep a wet rag on hand to cool down the shaft between grinds, it gets hot.

BTW can peeEeeple sortA CHek thaier spaelin mor ofin

How about sit the the lip on the end of the pully in a bench vice and tap or hammer the motor shaft till it pushes threw?
