Hmmm phillip, how much do you think an arena like Andrews would cost? I would be more than happy to help pay. I would say if we each put in $20 we would be able to build one that would be capable of taking small spinners and if we forked out we would be able to get an arena that can take australias meanest spinners!!!

hmm well i would say figure about $250 for the arena.

i think nick spent about $270 and that was for 3 sheets of 3mm lexan, which was enough to cover the front of our wall, and all the timber pieces that where needed to support it. thankfully we also had jeffs garage to put it all in.

saw bots also keep chucking crap out at people thats why we went to the lexan so readily.

but chucking some timber panels on the floor and going making a ghetto arena is still cool Cool

I doubt that I will be able (afford) to start an arena any time soon.

I would say 4m x 4m, that is for a decent featherweight arena. How big is you arena andrew?

the shed Marto and myself are converting is an old stable... the usable internal size will be 3.5m wide by 5m long - is this big enough or should we not bother ?

the main reason I ask is that I'm about to pour several hundred $$'s worth of gravel/concrete into it to prepare an arena floor, not to mention 6mm thick polycarb screens, marto is preparing concrete panels to line the walls, etc...

the arena will be lightweight spinner proof, have large viewing areas (2 of), and competitors will stand at opposite ends of the shed....

If the size is OK, it will be finished in time for the Xmas holidays...

Any thoughts ?

Looks like I'll have an arena in my backyard before I have a bot bigger than an ANT !! Laughing

Any Arena is better than no arena.. 3.5m x 5m gives you 17.5sqM of space, that should be ok for one-on-one action, might get a little tight in a rumble or if the Rotwang bots show up.. (Gary has been building the biggest bots size wise so far.)

6mm polycarb is not generally considered thick enough for lightweight spinners.. 10-12mm seems to be the standard for them. it might cope for a while when people are just starting out, but as soon as someone goes and builds a pro-level lightweight spinner with mag-motors or similair, you will feel pretty nervous behind just 6mm. I'd suggest staying with feathers unlessyou can afford 10mm or you want to have to disqualify someone because they were too good..

In any case, its good to see someone putting together another Arena, Where abouts in Qld were you located again ? I think Qld has lagged a bit behind the other states in the sport growing because only Andrew (Vertex) has a place to play, and hes miles from everywhere.. Laughing

I had an idea that would allow us to have things like mag moter spinners in a 6mm polycarb arena very cheaply, the idea is to use cyclone fencing or similar and use it so that it is reinforcing the polycarb, this will at least make the arena safer if not completely solve the problem

Well dont forget that in most if not all arenas in america etc they always have a air gap and something making it damn near impossible to get to the actual lexan. We only fight with 3mm and its pretty godo because i sat watching the rumble and there was a good enough gap so basilisk could not get close to the lexan because if it did it would have anhialated it. Basically lexan should only be used for stopping flying debri (scoopy's saw at robowars) ad not flying robots.

So a arena should be made strong enopugh that a part from the robot hopefully shouldnt penetrate it.

$300 will buy you about 1.5 sheets of 6mm polycarb (2440mm x 1220mm), so not very likely..
