a viable gear idea? antweight repeating axe/hammer
Had our first hand encounter at adelaide robot combat the other week. kids loved it, and want to get into the bots. We've ordered a couple basic kits to get them started, and in the future plan to modify them for some active weapons.
That got me thinking about an axe/hammer style weapon (even though you probably don't see many in antweight)
The original idea came from a sprinkler style gear (pretty cool)

good repeating action, but there wouldn't be much power in that.
Then I was thinking of a mousetrap action, a lot of power for not much weight.
Could I use a gear to prime a torsion spring? and then it would make it act like a repeating axe/hammer, but with some power!
Would this be viable?
I had to do it on paper to visualise how it would work.
There isn't any info on it's torque so you will need to do some experiments with your torsion spring power. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

I've seen one of the guys in the UK do it (one of the builders of Nuts in Robot Wars), the reddit thread is
here.
He 3D printed a mechanism just like the sprinkler one you linked, so it can certainly work.
Not sure the best motor for it though - for a spring mechanism you'd want a high torque motor but if you go that sprinkler gear style you might do better with a brushless and aim for repeating rapid hits - you could call it Angry Woodpecker

Cheers for the replies, its good to get some feedback.
Steve,
I've seen that reddit thread and it looks cool, but seems to lack some oomph. doesn't look like it'd have much damaging power. I could be wrong though.

with these antweight bots, roughly how much spare weight do you have to play with once you have a basic running chassis?
Shakey on there builds (prints) alot including fleas (25g)

Fleas are 75g, Nanoweights are 25g, and those UK guys build some amazing bots in those sizes.
It terms of weight - it really depends what parts (ESC(s), receiver, battery, wheels) you choose, and how you build. I very much throw a design together and then try and make it meet weight.
