Ants coming to Vic?

Hi NMO, I see this thread has gone quiet. Did you get enough interest for the Ants? If there is interest could I add one, possibly two more? Arena looks great!

Talked to Matt today. He is interest in joining in as is Rob.
Matt has 2 young kids he thinks will be involved.

I will help with the bot building where I can but it is nothing like I have done before .

Think I might start with folded aluminum pushy bots for the kids.Just to get the feel of building for the weight.
Rob is going Green Ant at this stage.

Designing and building with the kids. We now have one working horizontal spinner and at size and weight (against all odds). Now working on a pusher. Sounds like the Arena is the sticking point - any updates? I can have a look at it if someone has some notes/specs

Have a look at some earlier posts in this thread, I describe the arena we use in Adelaide.

Will do! Thanks Fryddog.

What would be the minimum size Arena for Ants? Would 4'x4' with 6" gully at each end be big enough? Just wondering if a 6'x4' box trailer would be the way to go for a permanent and portable setup, similar to the Canadian Kilobot arena. Secondly, what would be the minimum for Beetles?

I'm not sure what the minimum is. I once read somewhere that 900x900 was the minimum but it can be what ever you want I suppose. We went with 1.2x1.2m because that fit perfectly inside the rear tray of my co organiser's Ute. If it helps, 1.2x1.2m (or 4'x4') is seems to be becoming the standard size in SA. The QLD arena is smaller too but I forget what the size was and theirs has a single pit.
Again no idea what the minimum size for a Beetle arena would be. Ours is 1.7x1.7m with two large drop off pits on opposite ends.
The trailer idea is pretty cool!

Heading over to SA for the weekend with Rob.

Lots of parts on order so after seeing real working ants for the first time we will be set to get something working.

Many thanks Frydog - really appreciate your comments! Sizing looks like it may suit Ants at least - I’ll look into it.

After competing in the ant weight arena in qld, the different construction make for a very different fighting experience and if it was the regular arena i competed in i would of build my ants very differently.

for example the smaller size made my speed more of a disadvantage than advantage.
The metal walls instead of wood meant my weapon mounts where a bit weak for the collisions. and the low walls meant it was possible to be lifted out of the arena instead of waiting for the pit to drop.
By the way i was running a horizontal spinner.
Just some food for thought.

Thanks James - certainly food for thought! If you and Fryddog have time, I'll post a design to see what you think. Mind you the Director of Activities isn't so excited about having a trailer blocking up our small backyard - so a little ground work has to be done first.
