Thank you guys...

I'm sorry that the 230mm I wrote was completely wrong... I was just grabbing that number out of my memory, and 230mm was the shaft length for the early versions. (when this bot was 4WD)

The actual number should really be 175mm...

I'm wondering how hard is it to cut one of those shafts with a hacksaw... If it's relatively easy I might just go pick up that 17 dollar shaft and hack it down.

The shaft is surface hardened - its possible to cut it with a hacksaw if you are patient. An angle grinder with a thin cut-off blade will slice through in a few seconds.

Ok I see, thanks for the info.

Question, when looking for heat treating plants, what should I type into google? I found a few plants in Sydney but they all seem to be doing heat treating on large parts. (I did request quotes anyway, but I haven't received any replies just yet.)

The place I used was in Botany - can't recall the name. The trouble with most heat treaters is that they only get business from industry for large quantities and the best they might do is include your parts in a larger batch - which will not be the same steel.

Here is an idea: custom knife makers need their products heat treated and unless they invest in an expensive kiln, they must use some small batch heat treating business. The largest knife making supplier is Gameco - Artisan Supplies: https://www.artisansupplies.com.au/ They sell small heat treating ovens and could either recommend a customer or a commercial place.

Aha that's a really nice idea... However I'm living in someone else's house, so I probably can't just go put a oven somewhere...

I guess I will try it out with more heat treating plants and see what comes out...

Update:

Just did a mock-up with electronics at where they should be... Everything fits except for the weapon motors. I didn't leave enough room for the three leads from the motor, so I will need to file the side plate a bit for the leads to fit.

That's not what I meant - ring Gameco and see if they can recommend somebody to do the heat treating for you. Those ovens are really expensive - probably over $2K for one that can fit the weapon disk Shocked

Don't the motor leads fit in the cut-out at the bottom of the motor hole? I just noticed another problem - when the motors are mounted the plastic top cover that goes under them will be impossible to remove.

Yes the leads go in the cutouts, which are a bit too small. The leads are currently up just for the look.

Yeah the top cover cannot be removed, the only way to access the bot would be to flip it over and do it from the bottom. That's why I changed the drive motor access gate from top to bottom.

EDIT: just as an afterthought, I should have made the motor access gate out of steel instead of ali. Now it's a 5mm ali part with holes in it holding the drive motor in place, which might not be the nicest thing ever.

Just sent an email to Gameco, hopefully they will find me someone to do the job. Very Happy Thanks Nick for the advice.

Update:

The shafts on the 775 motors are too long that I couldn't fit it into the P60 gearbox. I will be cutting those shafts sometime in the future.

Also, what type of grease do P60s like?

Any kind of car grease will do, or a spray can of white lithium grease from Jaycar or maybe Bunnings is a less messy option.

You might have to phone Gameco - they can be slow on emails.

Update:

Soldered 2 drive ESCs and 2 weapon ESCs (with horrible joints). I also managed to totally ignore my own wiring scheme which I put just next to me. Now the XT90s on the weapon ESCs are female instead of male. Since both the ESCs now have female XT90s, it shouldn't be a problem.

Lesson learned: 1.A wimpy 40w soldering iron won't do me any good (I had to dual wield a 40w and a 25w to melt the solder. Glad I practiced dual wielding in video games years ago.Razz)

2.Heat shrinks smell bad.
