How far SE in Victoria are you ? Down Gippsland way, further or closer to Melbourne ?
I ask, because there should be a meeting/get together of some Vic Builders at SideTracked in Oakliegh either this weekend or next weekend and if you arent too far away, you might like to come and meet some of the other builders from Vic.
We will know for sure what day it will be sometime tomorrow afternoon/evening, and it will be posted on a thread here. If you can make it, let us know and ill mention when its happening here too _________________ Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people

Thanks for the warm welcome
Actually, one of the reasons why I signed up is because of the 'Battlebots!' topic on the CCHS Google group. I will definitely attend the SideTracked meet.
I live in the Frankston area.
There is a possibility that I have a team of 3 people (including myself)!

Just wanted to say thank you for the opportunity to catch up with some of the people so soon.
Huge thanks to Tim for letting me know about this.
Getting the opportunity to see two robots up close helped a lot. We're going to attempt to build something and compete.

As Cyber pointed out in
this thread
, there was a reasonable number of people at the last meetup. What is the likelihood of VIC kicking off?
The reason why I'm asking this is because I don't want to invest in a robot that will never compete.
Chicken and egg problem there. I would say likely but can never be sure.
Even if nothing happens in VIC it will still be a massive learning experience which makes it worthwhile in my opinion. And you can always travel up to Sydney or Bris for next comp once its done.
2008 Thought I had it then, they changed their mind.
The flip side of your question is what happens if I build an arena and no one participates. Guess I finish up with a nice testing shed. No excuses for not practicing driving.
So Barry is prepared to consider offers, there are 8 panels. 2 could make an arena similar to the Battleshed or 1 for House of Carnage. _________________ Satisfaction is proportional to effort and results.
If your willing to stick to sportsman a 1800 x 2400 sheet of 3mm would be enough to get you going and should be < $300 last time I checked. I am thinking my next arena is going to have to be ali as its just too heavy in steel as you really need 10mm+ of poly for full feather arena.
Is the Sidetracked arena still just sitting in storage? I am pretty sure given its age it would need all the poly replaced as I would bet it would be quite brittle these days.
I didn’t think it was worth while chasing Danny up for the Junkyard arena, last time I saw it, it was leaning against the side of the house out in the weather.
Pity, as it was 10mm.
General consensus seemed to be feather sportsman for Vic comp. _________________ Satisfaction is proportional to effort and results.

That is sort of why I asked the question... Are there many robots in VIC ready to fight right now?

Yeah. I'd have to build two so I have something to fight against.

Probably best to give Cyber time to work things out. After all he is still on the steep end of the learning curve.
Fair enough. I'm not trying to rush anyone here. Just enthusiastic!

Would involve traveling to Geelong.
I'd love to visit but travel is not really an option for me at the moment. If there are regular events and one of those events happens to be at Geelong, I'll make the effort to show up.

"If you build it, they will come".

If the Junkyard arena is rusty, does it matter? What difference does it make to the effectiveness of the arena?

Rust would not matter, but if the arena has been out in the sun for long, the polycarbonate panels will have degraded and possibly become brittle, That probably wouldn't matter for a sportsman event though. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

UV as in direct sun light effects polycarb, what Marto was getting at when he mentioned how long the Sidetracked arena has been in storage. It has almost never been outdoors though.
It’s one trip to Brisbane is the only time it’s been outside. _________________ Satisfaction is proportional to effort and results.

Hi Kev just curious as to your preferred construction methods. Are you a CAD laser cut catalog style or a tip shop gasless mig weld together or somewhere in between. Its just my normal advice is treat your first bot as a learning experience, keep it cheap alpha and retire it or use it as sparing or target practice. It takes the pressure of trying to build that perfect bot first time. Just thought it might give you something to think a bought while were all kept in suspence.
Better than the little blue controllers, have to stop to change direction faster forward than reverse but will come in handy for things other than drives on later bots.
Even if you’re a CAD CNC type builder I think its best to get something driving first. _________________ Satisfaction is proportional to effort and results.
