You can't use an AC motor in a robot. With three wires, it could be a three phase motor - can you post a picture to help identify it? A bit of history of what the motor was used for might also help. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

Just going to say if you can't work out the wiring might not be a good idea to be playing with AC motors. Electrocution hurts and can kill you.
They aren't any good in a robot anyway. If its an AC motor it may need a VFD controller if it has three wires. Or one of them is ground. _________________ Steven Martin

a photo would help a lot it sounds like a brushless motor, possibly. You will need an ESC to drive it. Is it from an R/C vehicle of some kind? Most have brushless motors. (90%~ efficient compared to 40%~ for brushed)
