CAD

new cad package from the core people who made solidworks.

http://www.onshape.com/

All in browser, looks like it'll be free for small users.

I signed up for the beta a few days ago, got access today.

Haven't used it yet but the pictures look good.

I can see how that could be really handy for bot designers using similar parts - beginners would really benefit from parts drawn by experts. I'm just a little bit cautious about cloud based services; they always seem to involve marketing & up-selling at some point.

The videos look good, so I'd give this a go at some point.

Probably worth very carefully reading the privacy statement and not designing your ultimate bot part you plan to sell and make money off but looks like it has some good features.

My copy of inventor is rather old now and most of my parts are out of date so keen to test it out when I do my next designing so I sent a beta request. Worst case I waste a day and ragequit although i am not sure yet on the implications of the 5 active private documents so this may be problematic.

They must be hoping or expecting to go well given the professional package cost on their website. Long term looks like they may be expecting it to be a success. $100 user/month over a medium turn quickly rivals the cost of commercial CAD software. It would be a tough slog to convince companies to pay large amounts of money and risk their IP with dodgy cloud practices.

I think for larger companies they will be doing "enterprise" licencing.
the $100/user/month sounds more like one man army pricing

Hey guys i know i have asked this before but i cant find where.

Going to be getting into learning CAD and work may even be putting me in a coarse for it as well.

Question is do i go solidworks or autocad?

I have a mac but have a windows partition just if i need it for cad or robot software.

I would prob prefer to use a program on mac as i hate windows and with win10 coming and speculation of subscription based os i am avoiding it more so.

Also there are so many variants and scaled down versions of the major cad programs these days i really don't know where to start.

I have to say I am still solidworks all the way. However there is absolutely no way an induvidual can ever afford a solidworks license.

This means your options are piracy, illegitimate student version or VMs with the 30day trial.

This in itself may be a reason to use fusion 360. I actually installed it on my mac and I have a 3yrs student license I just have never had the motivation to learn it over solidworks.

Inventor and fusion look good but from what i can tell use different types of modelling? parametric or direct modelling, Direct seems to be easier for more basic designs but i could be wrong.

Solidworks looks like an easier choice that has more content spread across less suites.

I like the look of inventor as fusion looks basic but i am having trouble working out what the difference between the two is.

They all seem to use different file forms not sure if that could be a problem down the track.

The full Autocad 2016 comes on mac but is expensive and solidworks editions are only windows.

i want to 3d print object and cnc or laser objects.

Its looking like im going to have to run Windows and a simple cad like Inventor or solidworks standard.

Leaning towards solidworks.

Solidworks and Inventor are both parametric modeling programs and very similar to each other. If you learn one, you can use the other. Comparing the two is like comparing Holdens and Fords, whereas comparing them to AutoCad is like comparing cars and motorbikes.

If you want to 3D print, go with the 3D programs.

Yeh it just seems more people like solidworks for "Ease of use"

Think ill go solidworks.

Altho with windows 10 and its screwing of users with subscription based OS for god sake i do hope with everyone switching to apple and abuntu overnight that they bring out OSX versions of solidworks and inventor.

Still very suss.

It seems like all who go for the "one time free upgrade" will not have anything further for the life of that device only.

Still leaves the door open for all non upgraded users to be stung or upgraded users who's device stops working and buy a new one will then be on a subscription service.

I dont trust microsoft at all with them moving everything over to subscription.

They have registered "windows 365" like all subscription based programs they have out and have announced multi level support packages so why all this if your buying windows outright why would there be so many different support options for security and updates?

Anyway i don't want to clog this thread maybe ill start a new on for this lol.
