What classes are we thinking?

It is the nationals, my opinion is full feathers are mandatory as an event.
To fill in time due to the high down time I think something is needed. This year ants did not work at all. Full planning may help a little but viewing the small arena will always be a problem.

This leaves beetles and sportsmen as other contenders for the roll of 'filler'. Qld as far as I know has no active beetles but are smaller so easier to fly with and some how we might be able to block off part of the feather arena to make an ant arena.

Sporsmen have the advantage of being the same arena and crowds seam to get into the non spinner fights now so may still hold a crowd and should have low attrition. Downsides is they are just as hard to fly with as a normal feather.

Of course the gallery may very well have input or preference one way or another.

Yep i think a mix of feather and sportsman would be good…..as people build these things keep in mind that it is possible to build a spinner proof sportsman …e.g. Kojak not that it was spinner proof this last Nats he he... but it can be done that way your bot can fight in both classes. Very Happy

That is my current thinking.
If people do plan to compete the one robot in two divisions at the same time some good old fashioned design like quick change motors with pre wired connectors and spare battery packs easy to change over may be required.

Without forcing you into any decisions given this is super early stages but are you thinking similar sportsmen to the Redfern event if it is feather+30lb sportsmen? [from memory key points: no wedges but spikes or plates are all good, no non circular saw spinners >400 rpm, must have an active weapon]

It makes a lot of sense to run feathers in both the open and sportsman class. It will save people having to move between arenas and save the time to install any bumpers that may be required for beetles. More sportsman class feathers should be able to compete all day as compared to the open class. Feather class robots are easier to see than ants or beetles.

We must cater to the viewing public during a public event.

I never went to a beetle event that was hard to see.

Why dont you QLD'ers use the downtime to hold a backyard beetle event, and get everyone building one? They're not exactly expensive to build.

That way you'll have them around as options and to compete in other events that run that class

(read: I want you to stop preventing beetles being considered as a class by not having any Smile )

Maybe NSW can organise a two day 'Robowars Beetleweight nationals' for 2015, that may motivate a few people to get building. Of course an arena would be needed.

How I see it is beetles have two things against them, the lack of numbers right now and the arena. Sportsmen only have one of these.

Do full beetle events suffer the same kind of attrition rates we see in the full feathers?

I wonder if there are more sportsmen 30lb or beetles near combat ready right now.

Good to hear, I thought I herd you guys got rid of the beetle one due to storage issues, maybe that was the ant or I am going senile in my old age. Maybe I'll prototype my feather idea in beetle size, seamed to work ok for glen
