... because Demon wasn't scary enough, he needed a partner in crime haha
Very nicely built machine, and it shows! That impact on Mr Mangle was incredible...

How did the chassis hold up to taking the hits, too? Looks very solid!

The frame has a gouge on the side where Mr Mangle hit it but the panel didn't bend. The disk is a write-off; its so bent that it hits the frame. The other problem is that the Scorpion weapon motor has ripped the threads out of it's mounting holes - hopefully there is enough metal to tap the motor base for larger screws. I am looking forward to a rematch as soon as possible Twisted Evil

Thats pretty much what i saw too. The two front cover panels have busted the fusion welds at the top from the bent blade smashing into it, so ill have to redo those. Aside from that the chassis seems more or less good. Need to pop the weapon axle out to see if it has mashed the holes out but hasn't seemed to.

Tapping the motor should be okay. Should've done it before hand really. Who knew 4x m3's in like 4mm of metal wouldn't hold Rolling Eyes

Putting a thin plate of 1mm titanium over the top of the brushless front housing (between the rotating bell and the back of the front plate) could stop it ripping out.

Perhaps just dispensing of the stock stator mount and having that and the motor mount as one single piece of machined aluminium could be viable Smile

Going to have to do alot of thinking and analysing on the new weapon. Those disks were always a bit crap for strength and now days just not a viable option. Maybe a huge bar or some kind of thick hub with replacable tool steel ring etc. Time will tell.

Rematch should be epic, but hopefully in the finals next time Laughing

How about a thick aluminium disk like Professor Chaos?

Could be good as it would remove the need for a seperate hub. But getting a slab of high grade aluminium 400 square and 40-50 thick might get super pricey. One thing more to cad up Very Happy Could build a brushless into it directly as well.

Very curious to see what the strength is like for a bar vs a blade for a similar weight though

The problem with making a short bar is that the head(s) have to be massive to equal the KE of an equivalent sized disk.

Ah, I wondered if that was going to have happened. My design had an extra bearing mounted at the top and bottom with a 10mm titanium replacement shaft so that it wasn't reliant on the 4 screws for support. It made the robot taller/heavier and have less ground clearance though... no idea which is the better option.

If you look there's two holes on the top panel next to the weapon motor for a bearing support. But it needs to be able to slide with the motor to facilitate belt tension = has to be large = has to weigh a fair bit. That and you run the risk of something smashing it in and locking the motor.

Considering the blade grabbed the belt hard enough to yank the motor out of its mounting i'm not too worried about not having the additional support from the perspective of bending the axle (tho you never know!).

Hell, might just do a hub motor and not need to fix any of it hehe

Gotta grab him back off Nick then i can start scheming Very Happy

Better hurry - I might start doing my own mods on it soon! Laughing You might find brushless drives and titanium bits...

In that case i might be around in a month or three for him then Shocked Razz

Will you be about tommorow? Have to go pick up a new bike around 1 so could possibly swing by and grab all my broken robots sometime after?

This stood out to me on my Nth readthrough of this. Is 2011 not much good for robot stuffs compared to 6061? I can get both fairly easily and was gonna get some 2011 for some pulleys and stuff. Won't bother if its crap tho. Sorry if off topic etc.

Cheers

2011 is very easy to machine and gives a great surface finish. Its not particularly strong or hard compared to 6061 so its probably fine for pulleys but not for structural parts or parts that might get hit.

Today I learned: That ^^

Thats some interesting info, cheers Nick. The pulley has to kind of be a bit hella so 6061 it is. However its given me the idea 2011 might be a good idea to use for some drive gearbox parts which require quite a lot of machining, lots of boring to accommodate ring gears etc so the easy machining property might save me some time and effort there.

Thanks Smile
