Middleweights/Heavyweights Competition

So take into account the keenness following a large US event is always high but I was considering if we could potentially have a bit of a middleweight or heavyweight rumble.

Realistically I think we would all be using 2-4 winches in these bots and personally it would be a quite extended process for me to build something. But I reckon a no spinner heavy comp is more than doable on a small scale.

For arena I can probably get dad to position a ring of concrete blocks on a slab and we just setup some polycarbonate as barriers for builders.

This would obviously mean no spinners but wedges, grabbers and lifters would be cool.

Would there be interest in this I really think it could be done for 500-1000 per robot all we are really missing is a 100-200A ESC.

I sounds like a HW sportsman event - would electric powered hammers be OK?

I don't see why not have to make sure the protection we setup. Or distance we place between us is adequate but otherwise no more dangerous than flippers.

I have some parts that would work in a HW but no place to build it - anyone want to team up?

Alternatively, perhaps more people would get involved with lightweights?

Lightweights is too close to feathers. I reckon go full heavies as it's more interesting. However even middle is on the edge of what you can do as one person.

Was Huntsman's drive powerful enough? What peak current did the 500 W scooter motors draw?

I am going to build a second lightweight to complete double dragon at some point and we already have one so I am keen to stick with that. Also Middle*Weights have successfully competed with TZ85As as ESCs for wheel chair motors.

Sounds like a second coming of robojoust, love that event Very Happy

Yeah i wouldn't mind doing something like this off in the future. Part of me does want to make a heavyweight though. Doubt it would be a huge difference in effort between making one vs a middleweight in the end Razz

Hello Etek powered something! Shocked

Would definitely need a firm commitment to having such an event well in advance. Not getting suckered into building for weight classes that won't pan out D: too little time these days.

Yeh well I would need a firm commitment that there was going to be enough robots before organising an event.....

It is your classic chicken and egg problem. Just build something that you could take to US instead.

Yes

Huntsman's design wasn't good. It's total weight was 80kg and most of it was in the front armour, axe frame and motors at the front. There wasn't enough weight over the wheels to push the front around. Huntsman 2 will be 4wd to fix this. I think. There's 5 Huntsman 2's on my computer at the moment Embarassed I just can't stop drawing.

I'm not sure of peak current. I was running the 24V motors for drive and was using IFI Victor 883's and they didn't get warm. I was persuming they were simalar to Bosch 750's, but with really crap magnets and brush housings

And one test that I performed, that no one ever saw, was that I put padding on the axe head to turn it into a seat, rested my feet in front of the top covers and drove it like a wheel chair. The damn thing took off so fast it was doing wheelies and spun on the spot beautifully. Was the only way to get it to drive like I imagined it would. I did this while alone because sitting on a 1m long, 12kg axe probably wasn't the smartest thing any robot builder has ever done, but it was really, really fun. Rolling Eyes

I will rebuild it one day, no matter what else happens.

I'm to see MW/HW's become a reality, but I would like to see be a class that remains budget oriented. I think if we could keep such a class to a lower budget parts and materials like scooter motors, RHS tubing, go kart wheels and scrap metal armor (washing machines!) would still leave a lot of room for creativity and plenty of destruction with easy to replace materials.

I'm not keen to see this just turn into who can afford magmotors, eteks and 100kg of Titanium/Hardox plating. It's not just a monetary reason, but I believe if was start spending big dollars into big robots, people will stop putting effort into their featherweights as they cannot afford to do both classes.
