I figured you would just make a box to sit on the mill bed enclose and heat that _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets

You could still easily make a heated bed and I dont think enclosing it is completely impossible
EDIT yeah what jake said
I think you want to be able to use ABS tho and not just PLA
I like this idea much though, you should do it plus think of the enormous print size! _________________ <Patrician|Away> what does your robot do, sam

After farting around with Steves old reprap….i realised that they suck ….eg after waiting 6 hours for something to print…. you don't want to go and get your printed part out of the printer, and all there is just spaghetti….that happened many times with my efforts on the reprap…..the up just works….my only real annoyance is its a bit small 120x120 x120….but then any bigger tends to warp apparently. See if you can get an ex-demo up through angus would be genius. _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

One of the major problems with using a mill or router table with an extruder head bolted on is that its unique - no support and no reference settings in the software. It would likely be much harder to get it working than something purpose built with manufacturer and community support.
After a budget injection, I am thinking about one of the Makerbot printers; the 2X looks interesting. Something to look into after the UK event. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

Have you guys seen this from Velleman? http://www.k8200.eu/
It's a 3D printer with a work size of 200x200x200, a heated bed and works with both PLA and ABS. Apparently Jaycar are going to be selling it in Australia for ~$1300 in kit form (several days to put together). It appears with much fanfare in their new catalogue, but I couldn't find it on their website.
According to Jaycar it will print a smartphone case in around 30mins.
Here are the specs from the Velleman website:
•Linear ball bearings: 8 and 10 mm (0.314" and 0.393")
•Technology: FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) for PLA and ABS
•Power supply: 15 V / 6,6A max.
•FTDI USB 2.0 to Serial
•Dimensions of printable area: 20 x 20 x 20cm / 7.87 x 7.87 x 7.87"
•Typical printing speed: 120 mm/s
•Maximum print speed: 150 to 300 mm/s (depending on the object to be printed)
•Extrusion nozzle: 0.5 mm
•Extrusion thermistor: NTC 100K
•Extruded aluminum profiles: 27.5 mm / 1.08" wide
•Movement: 4 NEMA 17 stepper motors
•Resolution: ◦Nominal mechanical resolution: ◾X and Y: 0.015 mm / 590.55 µin (smallest step the printing plate can move in the X and Y direction)
◾Z: 0.781 µm / 30.74 µin(smallest step the printing plate can move in the Z direction)
•Software: Repetier version 0.84 and up www.repetier.com
•included: 5m PLA black sample

Its another Reprap derivative- the other guys are going to hate on it . There are quite a few similar printers using aluminium extrusion like that and most of them get at least average reviews. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

We just got a makerbot 5th gen in the studio, and god damn some of the things they've added to make it 'easy to use' are just stupid... you can't jog the axis from the menu... wat.
Also, their filament drawer only fits their new $90 / roll slim size, so you have to do an ugly hack to fit normal rolls. Other than that, the smart extruder heats up crazy fast and the bed levelling is really quick, has an auto detect so you just turn the knob till an led turns on.

It's disappointing that the 5th gen has been dumbed down for consumers but at the same time its not enclosed for PLA. I wonder if they will bring out an equivalent to the 2X model?
Once the UK trip is finished, I am going to jump right in to this... _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

What's the possibility of making a winder to transfer a regular spool of filament onto the custom spool? _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

It's been done countless times, but the whole point is you bloody shouldn't have to do that on something worth $2k+ _________________ https://www.halfdonethings.com/

True, if they are going to gouge us for consumables at least they should move the the pricing model of inkjet printers - maybe they will when the sales volume goes up.
I heard that some manufacturers were using ID chips in their spools, which was why I wondered if you can just wind on more filament or if you had to use new branded spools all the time. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

I wonder if this announcement from Autodesk will be the open equivalent to the Up software?
