i wonder what gear they use for their video streaming? Those feeds don't look like lame webcams.

Brad is using GoPro's for the main arena and webcams for the outside pit cams.

It's done using Open Source software, OBS.
The Gopro is piped in via a capture card and the webcams are USB.

I can volunteer my original GoPro hero as one of the cameras if needed. Is there any info on the capture card that was used? There are quite a few available at reasonable prices but its good to know about video quality and compatibility up front.

One of the things that really impressed me about the UK Nats evernt was the amount of professional production gear they had; perhaps we should start building up some key pieces of gear?

I can easily build a dedicated video capture PC that can be shipped around events; I even have a flight case that would fit the gear. The OBS software looks promising and there is plenty of time to develop the system before October.

I think between us all, we have plenty of gear to do this, the problem is having a dedicated (non competitor) someone to spend 2-3 days at the event running the broadcast and keeping it active.

It was similar to setup we were looking at last year using black magic gear.

A dedicated production person would definitely improve the professional level of the video. If we cut back on video titles and scene switching, its likely that we can just have someone minding the streaming service part-time.

Perhaps we can start off by cataloguing all the gear we have / need?

Good Idea Nick….we have a simple blackmagic intensity card that goes in a pcie slot(its only like an inch long)….it takes the hdmi output from your go pro no sweat…..happy to donate that to the capture pc….. Very Happy this card only has one hdmi input though….but you can add more of theses cards to have more hdmi inputs apparently.

the option Steve mentioned there was the blackmagic television studio

http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/au/products/atemtelevisionstudio/

we even asked blackmagic to donate one for last year…..they said no…he he... its a $1000ish item….but it offers loads of inputs and software to mix and stream the video…..but yeah needs a dedicated operator for it to work.

Thanks Miles! Here is my inventory.

What I have right now:

Original GoPro hero, needs some mounting options.
CANON HFG10 video camera
quality fluid head and tripod for above
external mic for above
several road cases that would fit cameras, cables & accessories
Assorted computer bits & bobs, lots of fast disks
Small audio mixer desk - not sure we would need one
Assorted long audio leads, mostly balanced XLR for above

What I can get at short notice:

PC in a road case with plenty of SSD storage for video
integrated keyboard & LCD screen for above
more HDMI capture cards for above

What else we may need:

At least one more GoPro
More lighting?
Quality HDMI cables

Sounds good Nick...We got 2x gopro hero 2 cameras (which i guess will be tied up running to galleries monitors via hdmi) and jules has a go pro hero 3 which could be mounted somewhere. But we discovered last year that the go pro 3 won't send a signal through a long hdmi cable as well as a gopro hero 2….so something to consider.

We got a little canon hg10 which can shoot al day and has hdmi out as well.

lighting…good point ...we got 3 big led panel lights with stands... made for video production which will be nice.

You can get hd webcams for $60 for the competitors video angle….i like that..cause it adds the human element to the fight. Very Happy

I remember the HDMI cable problem - you really didn't look happy! We can get HDMI boosters and splitters to get the most out of the cameras we have; they seem to be quite cheap. With so many GoPros available, we can probably use the older ones to cover the competitors - back in my video days, it was always preferred to use the same cameras so the 'look' was always the same.

Could we mount those LED panels over the arena roof?

Wouldn't one camera for drivers and one for the pits or audience be better than 2 for the drivers? Watching the american stream it felt like no one was there. I wanted to see the panic in the pits between the fights rather than staring at the floor.

I have one of these for recording HDMI without interfering with the signal:

http://www.mwave.com.au/product/avermedia-live-gamer-portable-1080p-hdmi-capture-box-c875-ab49337

Portable and records to SD or a HHD/SSD in a computer. I think the biggest problem we're going to face with streams, is internet speeds / access.. Confused

I've also got some pro mic gear and recording software... should we need to supplement the go pro audio. Great for commentary. Smile
