Wow, I must have missed a New Product Friday post; that is a very handy gadget! A bit expensive at $20 USD but if it it doesn't break, its going to be very handy. I also liked their spark gap igniter https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11218 but this looks more practical.

This was what I saw in Hot Stuff @ robogames. He also had a custom board which one of his friends makes to drive it along with the gas solenoid.

What would be needed if your bot ran on a much higher voltage? Would a dropping resistor be enough, or would a proper regulator be required? Would a small hacked brushless controller be a good solution to PWM a higher voltage to drive the igniter?

12v at 1.7-2.4A so some sort of regulator would be required I think.
a little cheap 12v switch mode regulator would be the way to go I think.

sparkfun have a new product RSS, that's where i saw that.

spark gap igniters are bound to cause electrical issues without taking some care ;->
though at least the 2.4Ghz stuff we use these days should hopefully be more robust.

Would I be able to run one of these off 14.4V or would that need a regulator?

Its a resistance heater, so an extra 2.4 V will likely make it hotter and shorten it's lifespan quite a bit. The maximum current @ 12V is 2.4A, so you could just add a 1 ohm, 10W dropping resistor to get *about* the right voltage across the igniter. A switching regulator would do a better job but at a higher price.
